York Archaeological Trust, (YAT), the team behind the JORVIK Viking Centre, are launching a series of collaborative exhibitions showcasing a range of community-led initiatives with selected partners from across Yorkshire, funded through Arts Council England’s Museum Resilience scheme.

The first exhibition, YourDIG: Southburn, opens to the public on Saturday and highlights the fascinating history of the Southburn Archaeological Museum and its unique collection including Iron Age pottery, an Anglian small-long brooch and fragments of a Roman glass bangle. Also on display will be an Iron-age chalk figurine; one of more than forty examples found across East Yorkshire.

Located within DIG, a hands-on archaeological visitor attraction in York, the YourDIG exhibition space will provide communities with a platform to share their work and their commitment to our local heritage for the benefit of the wider public.

YAT’s Community Engagement Manager, Jen Jackson. said, “York Archaeological Trust has a long standing ambition to inspire local people to find out more about the history and archaeology of their area. The YourDIG exhibition space is an opportunity for visitors to see how people in Yorkshire have investigated the fascinating remains of the past from close to home. We hope this new initiative will lead to many exciting partnerships with people from all over Yorkshire as we explore archaeology together.”

“The extremely knowledgeable volunteers from Southburn Archaeological Museum worked closely with YAT’s team to design the exhibition and tell the story of their unique collection. The teams from the different museums worked together to share knowledge about the objects and how to display the finds for a new audience in York.”

YourDIG: Southburn opens Saturday, 20th January and runs until 15th April 2018, when it will be make way for another YourDIG exhibition. Admission to the exhibition is free but charges apply to access the other areas at DIG.
