South of Ravenglass village stand the impressive ruins of the Roman Fort and Bath House. They are part of the Hadrian’s Wall UNESCO World Heritage site (opens in new window).
As well as the soldiers, there was a whole community living outside the fort. We want to find out about what daily life was like for them. Who were they? What did they eat? How did they communicate with the outside world?
Romans in Ravenglass is a partnership project between ourselves, Muncaster Parish Council and the Muncaster Estate. York Archaeological Trust will supervise the archaeological investigation.
When do excavations start?
Archaeological excavations will take place over two four week blocks. They will start in September 2013 and continue in September 2014. In between we will analyse and present what we’ve found out so far.

How you can get involved
We need volunteers to help with this fascinating exploration of Roman life. If you volunteer, we will train you in archaeological techniques. These include:
- geophysical surveying
- archaeological excavation and recording
- site photography
- handling finds and objects
We will also train people in social media and film making to help record the project’s progress. And we need enthusiastic guides to spread the word through talks, tours and even just chat to passing walkers about what’s going on!
How to apply
No experience is needed as full training will be given – all you require to become a volunteer is enthusiasm for the local heritage.
In particular we would love volunteers from the local Copeland District to get involved. People from this area will be given priority booking.
Please complete the Application Form to a Romans in Ravenglass volunteer (PDF) and the Romans in Ravenglass Booking Form (PDF) to get involved.
