  Archaepedia
Posted by: Sniffer - 5th September 2006, 05:53 PM - Forum: The Site Hut - Replies (10)

The Recceology Group are launching the Archaepedia in September 2006.

This is an online encyclopaedia to which members of the project contribute. Based on the famous Wikipedia (and using the same software), it is different in two fundamental respects:

Firstly, it provides greater focus on the subject matter – embracing not only the practices of archaeology, but techniques, science and overviews of history.

Secondly, this is more ‘demand-driven’ with scope for those in education to say what they feel they need more information about.

This education element is very important. With a substantial increase in the interest shown in the subject over the past ten years in the UK alone (thanks to popularisation through the medium of television), there is a thirst for knowledge that falls into a dead space - too great a thirst for the brief glimpse given by conventional media, and insufficient a thirst to enrol on a major education course immediately.

It’s that dead space that Archaepedia intents to occupy.

But what do people contributing get out of it?

Well, there are two real benefits. Firstly, there’s that commitment to educate which is not only becoming a feature of professional standards and codes of practice, but is also part of the fire which fuels the passionate archaeological person. It is hoped that the project will become a demonstration of that commitment.

Secondly, there’s a networking side. Over the next few months, it’s intended that we draw in more contributors from the English-writing world outside the UK. That will bring more interaction and propagation of ideas. Archaeology is a very social world in many ways, and this will enhance and reinforce that perception.

Currently, the Help files, tutorials and other documentation are being written and testing is being carried out. Registration details are being accepted already, and the associated site - including the Diggers’ Bar – is also nearly ready to accept the new members.

Membership is free. This is a voluntary project which has been mildly sponsored by the Recceology Group and it doesn’t carry advertising, fees or the onward selling of member details.

If there are any queries, you can write to mailto:admin@recceology.com

There’s a pre-launch registration link at http://www.recceology.com/L10Apps/register.htm

Thanks to the kind BAJR Host for letting me mention this in this sett!

Help. I've been asked to come up with some archaeological questions for a quiz with a humourous slant. Open to the floor.

A tax-paying member of the public wants to take a curator and their LPA to task over their behaviour relating to archaeology in their county/city over some years.Does a member of the public have the right to inspect Briefs/specs held by the LPA?

  High profile public campaign

Is it time to pursue public support through a high profile media campaign for desparately needed change in the British heritage industry?

A group of professionals finally decides that enough is enough and, after years of overwhelming industry silence and smoke screens consisting of pseudo-legal loopholes and get-out clauses, that its time to go public. It`s decided that a high profile public campaign is needed to both inform the tax-paying public and more importantly, expose the huge pitfalls and absurdities so apparent in current British heritage industries. Whether you are conservators/museum staff/HER/curators/unit staff or diggers, what would you like to see in such a campaign?

Curator issues vastly inadequate spec in advance of fieldwork on a nationally important urban site set in a conservation area. Local commercial unit secures the contract and writes an extremely inadequate method statement/project design. This is accepted by the curator. Despite method statement/project design stating that a single context system is to be utilized on site-no such thing happens and the site is excavated as if it were a rural evaluation.Three days before the end of the excavation schedule, large amounts of archaeology is left un-explored/recorded and to make matters worse, a completely untouched and intact prehistoric landscape (with BA finds and features) is discovered to underlay the site under excavation.Site staff immediately contact grown ups.The last day of the excavation arrives and the curator did`nt attend or contact site staff. Site staff go their separate ways and leave behind them, an unfinished site and a well preserved prehistoric landscape. The developer paid a commercial unit to undertake the excavations to the requirements of the curator. Who is responsible? The curator or the commercial unit?

  Roman Roads
Posted by: Searcher - 2nd September 2006, 03:50 PM - Forum: The Site Hut - Replies (13)

Is this the right place to ask this question?

I'm currently about to embark on a study of some iron-age trackways and roman roads in the SE England.

I have the works, "Roman Roads in Britain" by ID Margary and "Roman Roads in the SE Midlands" by The Viatores, but both of these are from c.1950's.

Does anyone know of any published works which are more recent?

i can only offer love and thanks in exchange for this knowlege, but you will be rewarded in heaven if you help me out!

Thanks Very Much

Looking at the extremes people will go to to avoid archaeological conditions....

I have jsut talked to my planners about a 17th century Mill, which I 'would' have requested a building survey (this happened before I was brought in as a council archaeologist) ... sadly it burnt down in what was described as an electrical fire... - oh woe and thrice woe says the owner... My loverly building... but wiping tears from his eyes he bravely decides to rebuild without the need for listed building works... however the fire investigators then found that the electric company had cut off supply to the building 2 weeks before the fire ..

Does anyone have (remember no names etc etc) any stories of extremes that developers or clients go to in order to adviod archaeology - make them funny... it is Friday after all.

Another was when I was a contractor - and imagine my delight when turning up on site and finding the entire area JCB'd out to a depth of 2 metres ... (over the weekend) .... Just to help me get started...!

Another day another WSI?
