whats so special about a bloody henge?
Posted by: Troll - 6th June 2005, 06:50 PM - Forum: The Site Hut - Replies (10)

Why are henges and associated monuments so important to the study of prehistory? Why is it important to understand these monuments in their wider landscape context? Discuss- why are henges and their landscapes important national assets?Smile

  diggers road test
Posted by: Troll - 5th June 2005, 11:44 PM - Forum: The Site Hut - Replies (26)

We all do it. Buy some old knacker of a car from a mate and hope for the best. In our position, beggars cant be chosers so, out of all the dillapidated skips we `ve used as modes of transport, which cars just kept delivering our carcasses to work on time every time? Conversely, which cars should definately be avoided cos doin the circuit would be easier on the bus?Big Grin

  Unhenged, undermining thornborough.
Posted by: Troll - 5th June 2005, 06:49 PM - Forum: The Site Hut - Replies (46)

Well, the ?150 car made it. Arrived at Masham about midday with a York colleague. The Thornborough free festy had all but taken over the sleepy Yorkshire village. My first port of call was a stand on the market staffed by Tarmac campaign staff. I asked what was going on and was told that "we`re the opposition mate". Not much of an orator and should pose no threat at all. Plenty of bands hammered away as people wandered amongst stalls of well, stuff really. Crystals/incense/shiny things/music and-my favourite of the day-henge fridge magnets. A room had been set aside and talks were given. Twas where we sat. Masham was for me, an example of how every day people feel about their heritage.A deep rooted connection with and, respect for, our ancestors. In this case, a deep respect for our ancestors` sacred space that is encapsulated in the unique Thorneborough landscape. It`s simple for me, I`m not remotely interested in how this national issue is dressed by the Tarmac apologists and their grateful consultants- NO-ONE should be allowed to destroy for profit what is essentially not theirs to take.}Smile I have retained some glossy stuff that I got from the Tarmac campaign-will send it to mr Hosty. One thing that did alarm me- where were all the big grown-up archaeologists that have made a living from these monuments? I saw four archaeologists there-me and my colleague were two of them. This issue is at the heart of all that is wrong in British archaeology today. Something pointed out by a gentleman from Rescue-consultants act on behalf of their clients.Developers are not clients. We as owners are the clients. Think we should get a lot louder and soon.Glossy and contrived hand outs like Tarmac`s need a response. Nicely done to all who organised and ran the day-you made me feel ashamed cos I`ve done nuffink. Who wants to play? Sacred landscape or a happy nest of Tarmac shareholders?[?]

  summers comin-a survivors guide...
Posted by: Troll - 1st June 2005, 05:34 PM - Forum: The Site Hut - Replies (22)

If working at full chat during the summer-how much water should an average digger be consuming hourly? Headgear? Skin care? How many hours is it considered safe to work in direct sunlight during the summer? Who carries anti histamine on site? Isolation/rural? Lets have it please- who is responsible for what and, what if any, conditions are considered (during summer) enough of a hazard to become embedded within a current risk assessment? Starters for ten? Anyone from a nice hot, far off country like to help out?Big Grin p.s ice creams on site should be written in as critical to performance and morale.

  Old training excavations
Posted by: Moby - 29th May 2005, 12:02 PM - Forum: The Site Hut - Replies (5)

Time for a spot of reminiscing...

Anyone got any tales about old training excavations they used to go on? Were they all the drunken, drug-crazed, debauched days that I remember?!

Also, where have all the massive training excavations gone?

I used to go to Crickley Hill every summer to learn how to be an archaeologist; digging during the day and drinking all night - seems quite accurate! Big Grin There would be over 100 volunteers there (numbers changing on a daily basis) from all over the world (one aussie had his trowel confiscated at the airport), all getting on rather well. Every wednesday several people would collect ?2.50 from everyone and then trundle into Cheltenham to buy booze to make some very good punch for one helluva party in the evening. Luckily Thursday was the day off [xx(] One week a hippy suggested we just bought 100 litres of lemonade and put a sheet of acid in the tub. He WAS being serious, but thankfully his suggestion was never taken up!

My nickname was 'Mark the Shark', for reasons I won't go into... [:I]

Curators - do you dig 'em?
Posted by: monitor lizard - 29th May 2005, 12:16 AM - Forum: The Site Hut - Replies (20)

Without knowing everyone's background, there are at least 4 curators in this forum, and I can only speak for myself and one other in saying that we've been through the trenches - and some fairly nasty ones at that - and have also had out fair experience of bad curators (see CK's stupid site strategy on the single-context thread for example).

Can I start this thread with 3 points?
1. What does a curator do?
2. what do you think a curator does (be reasonable, please, I'm a delicate soul!)?
3. what should a curator/curatorial service do?

I clearly have my opinion on number 1, and have ideas about number 3 (oh only if I had the time and resource!).

What do you all think?

Or One giant Leap for potential Project Manager Kind...

Is the transition from Project Officer to Project Manager a mighty leap or an easier number? I have met many an incompetent PM but also many good ones. Does being a PM suggest you have reached the zenith of the profession or just that you are pretty good at blagging interviews and wearing consistently spankingly clean Hi Vi`s so us lesser mortals can see you coming a mile off.

Indeed does anyone know of anybody who has leap frogged the PO bit altogether and blagged their way straight to PM....

I have also met a few County Mounties that would make you weep with their lack of knowledge.. How do these people reach these positions? How do they get through the interviews? How do they get selected for interview!!!! And on such a consistent basis....

We can but wonder..........[?]
