ArcView 3.3 on Windows 3.51 - chiz - 24th June 2009 Just in case anyone here has had this problem and can help..... I've just tried to install ArcView 3.3 on a new laptop, I get an error message that 'This program can not be installed on a Windows 3.51 Operating System' Anyone know of a workaround for this? Or should I check with Esri? or 'just' buy ArcGIS and learn a new GIS package....? ArcView 3.3 on Windows 3.51 - BAJR Host - 24th June 2009 You are using Vista I take it? so the bad news is.......... ArcView 3.x is not supported on the Windows Vista operating system, and there are no plans to support ArcView GIS 3.x on this operating system in the future. er.. the good news.... ah... er... <hr>Constant development is the law of life, and a man who always tries to maintain his dogmas in order to appear consistent drives himself into a false position. Mohandas Gandhi ArcView 3.3 on Windows 3.51 - chiz - 24th June 2009 yep, vista. After a brief check of Esri system requirements matrix I guessed as much, but hoped there would be a workaround. Oh well, guess I will have to put XP on the laptop, that should work shouldn't it? I've got some XP discs somewhere ArcView 3.3 on Windows 3.51 - BAJR Host - 24th June 2009 ah... the discs are here somewhere you could consider a dual boot system? allowing both XP and Vista. ArcView 3.3 on Windows 3.51 - BAJR Host - 24th June 2009 when the computer starts up... you could choose which operating system to use... therefore get best of bothworlds.. see here: http://www.syschat.com/dual-boot-vista-xp-vista-already-1946.html I of course accept no responsibilty for it blowing up your computer - you could pay someone at ComputerWorld (for example - or a local shop to do it) Constant development is the law of life, and a man who always tries to maintain his dogmas in order to appear consistent drives himself into a false position. Mohandas Gandhi ArcView 3.3 on Windows 3.51 - m300572 - 24th June 2009 Dual boot system is where you get fed up with te struggle to get the technology to work and kick your computer round the office with your safety boots - make sure you unplug it first in case of electric shock! ArcView 3.3 on Windows 3.51 - chiz - 24th June 2009 thanks for the link david, I think that may well be a solution, I'll have a chat with my 'IT support' and see how many pints it will cost... although I do normally prefer the m300572 method ArcView 3.3 on Windows 3.51 - Unitof1 - 25th June 2009 why do you need it? surely ?700 could be better spent? ArcView 3.3 on Windows 3.51 - kevin wooldridge - 25th June 2009 The problem with ArcView is that ESRI aren't really supporting it anymore... trying to get everyone to use ArcGIS 9.3......Which does work on Vista..... With peace and consolation hath dismist, And calm of mind all passion spent... |
