Who do you want to work for? - eggbasket - 4th August 2005

We keep hearing about the bad units and bad practice here. So, for a change and in the interests of following on from the Digger's fantasy unit league, who would you recommend as a good employer and why?

To start the ball rolling:
I found Bedford to be fairly good employers when I worked for them. Not sure how they are now as Albion Archaeology, but we used to get weekly briefings about the work situation; we were given suitable PPE (not the cheapest crap around); the diggers' accommodation was pretty good IMO; and the contracts were better than many in archaeology. Oh yes, and the unit management had a good line in catchphrases, which were a good source of amusement.

Cheers,
Eggbasket

I want to work for myself - even with all that entails. I think. Eventually. But you can all come too.

I've thought that too ML. How do you fancy "Kid-Lizard Archaeology"? Wink

Hmm... good units: NAU for decent contracts and very exerienced staff, nice sites. PCA London for giving people responsibility if they are ready for it or ask for it, OK pay, nice sites. OSA York for never ending contracts, experienced staff, the best pay anywhere.

All these units have negative aspects, but It's nice for once to plug the good units rather than whine about the crap ones.Smile

I have to say that over the years, my experience has generally been good, with the odd local difficulty here and there. I had a good time at West Yorkshire and once over the short contract gap (All Wakefield MDC contracts were temporary), the conditions and local authority perks (pension, paid leave etc.) were pretty good. Even the now defunct Tempvs Reparatvm weren't that bad, at least not when compared to some recent horror stories.

I obviously have nothing but praise for my current employer, and the Emperor has decorated the Deathstar quite nicely too.

I can tell you who I don't want to work for ever again!
But you'll have to ask me by email in private, cos its rude to mention the names of companies with really bad ethics toward their workers isn't it!!

Who do you want to work for? - BAJR Host - 18th August 2005

I wouldonly work for people who care about the archaeology first... client second.... but saying that...

Scottish [u]small </u>units are notorius for good pay, good conditions and happy enviroments... people like FIRAT or Addyman Associates or Kirkdale.... never heard of them?? thats cos they do not need to advertise!Big Grin

Another day another WSI?

If you care about the client second then you don't get paid to do the archaeology first.
