I was quite surprised about the guardians stand-p[oint on this actually although I know it was in comment. The sketch of the plight of archaeologists I though came accross as quite badly informed, perhaps akin to waht the the 'bunny huggers' chap would have said.
In actual fact I think on balance I would be happier to side with the Antiquity argument which was an intellectually sound argument (if (perhaps becuase of the nature of the 'data') lacking in any real substance), than be portrayed as a Viking re-enacter.

I refer to my previous comment - God I hate archaeologists.
They couldn't just say, hey look we've found some grafitti left by the Sex Pistols, that's quite interesting isn't it? No they had to make comparisons to prehistoric cave paintings/to art treasures/to upsetting the establishment/sticking their tongues out. Well, done, you had to over-egg it didn't you? Any chance the authors of the Antiquity article are of an age to remember when punk first happened and are feeling slightly sad that the excitment of their youth is now over? Perhaps a law should be passed so that all articles of an archaeological nature have to be under 1000 words, to prevent them decending into drivel. It isn't even academic debate, it's just going out to cause a fuss, a bit like Punk.

RedEarth - as someone who was at university in the early 1980s alongside John Schofield and Paul Graves-Brown I can confirm the first part of your question. The second part remains outside of my knowledge and will remain thus.

Reports are a different matter, they already probably are cut down to the bone in most cases anyway. Any shorter most could be on Twitter so I don't think a reduction in rates is very likely.

I did wonder. My concern is really that they seem to have deliberately set themselves up to be shot down, and in doing so potentially make archaeologists and archaeology look a bit foolish. But, like I say, I haven't read the article in Antiquity although I would like to.

Surely the graffiti would make it as a 'heritage asset' under PPS5? }
- I'd certainly shoe-horn it in somehow as a 'site' if I was writing the DBA, if only cos the research (well, the music anyway) would be well entertaining - which reminds me I've got a war movie DVD to watch as legitimate background research for another project :face-approve:
...actually its the background we're after, probably the only footage from 1944 of a site I've been digging on, but seem to recall the film in front of it's ok too, might get some beers in :face-approve::face-approve:
