Fenland District Council to relax archaeological planning regulations - Wax - 26th June 2011 You know thinking about this I wonder if the Fen lands rumpus is all a bit of a smoke screen. I am more worried about what is going on in Merseyside no archaeological advisor and an HER is now so expensive to access that only a commercial unit can afford the charges. ( yes they are apparently charging the general public and academics to acess the H.E.R). Councils that are quietly getting on with disregarding their heritage so big developers can freely get on with reviving the economy ( ha b..... Ha)(allegedly) But of course sending polite responses to concerned heritage types that they will most certainly take the heritage into consideration but they do have to make cuts. Death by a thousand small cuts. This is of course all rumour. Do any Bajerites know what's going on in Merseyside? The councillors up here are far more intelligent/street wise than the fens Fenland District Council to relax archaeological planning regulations - BAJR - 27th June 2011 Right... continuing with information about what is happening I quote from this excellent blog. http://lettersfromlidongni.blogspot.com/2011/06/fenland-philistinism-and-archaeological.html Letters from Li Dongni Quote:Do developers fund the education service in the fens? No, of course they don’t. If every developer was allowed to merrily destroy the archaeological record when building their housing estate, not one extra teacher would be provided for local children. Rather, the lack of historical information available to local schools would in fact damage the education of local children, while developers get to make even more profit. I don’t know about you, but to me that sounds like stealing from the children rather than giving them something. The start of the post does make you think! Quote:Democracy is a funny thing. We seem to be fighting a few wars at the moment to get other countries to sign up for it. China is continually bashed because it doesn’t want it. But sometimes there comes along a story that makes you wonder ‘do we really want it?’ Because it seems that sometimes people can elect leaders who are, quite frankly, barbarians. AND PLEASE DO NOT FORGET! http://www.petitionbuzz.com/petitions/supportfensheritage Sign it ! If someone could convince the same 40+ to get involved in this case it really would be a case of showing a unitied front amongst professional archaeologists....their continuing silence of course could send a completely different signal to the government.... Fenland District Council to relax archaeological planning regulations - BillyPilgrim - 27th June 2011 The IfA have published a letter they have sent to Fenland District Council on their website: http://www.archaeologists.net/news/110627-letter-fenland-district-council Have to say, I really like it. As well as confronting the issue it does a nice job of seeking dialogue with the elected councillors. As well as confronting the issue it does a nice job of seeking dialogue with the elected councillors. Agreed, it's a pretty good response. But it also presents the recommendations of the Southport Group as offering a possible way to address the Councillor's concerns. I don't know him personally, but from his public statements, I can think of few things that would annoy him more than developers having to accommodate public access. Given that he doesn't like professional 'bunny huggers', I can't see him thinking that having volunteers on site as well is the solution, particularly as this is likely to be result in slower excavation, longer delays and more cost to developers. Personally, I don't necessarily think that any of these things is necessarily bad of itself, but they don't seem likely to hold much appeal for Councillor Melton! Fenland District Council to relax archaeological planning regulations - BillyPilgrim - 27th June 2011 I agree it will likely hold no appeal for Cllr Melton, but at least he has been offered a way of climbing down from his perch with some dignity. The other interesting thing will be to see how the 33 other Fenland DC Conservative councillors react to the IfA?s offer. Has anyone had any indication of how supportive his group are of his statements? Fenland District Council to relax archaeological planning regulations - the invisible man - 27th June 2011 Hmm, I suspect they will totally ignore the letter. If you're lucky there might be an ill-informed one-line response. Fenland District Council to relax archaeological planning regulations - BAJR - 27th June 2011 Just read on Twitter that Mike Heyworth of the CBA will be on BBC Radio 4's PM programme in discussion with Alan Melton this evening! This is at 5pm. Today Monday - 27th June. Fenland District Council to relax archaeological planning regulations - Sparky - 27th June 2011 That was a particularly cynical plug for the Illuminati-like Southport Group. And white flag waving to boot. I was under the impression from the above discussion that the general concensus was for a united front. The IfA are offering to go to the table with offers of gifts; gifts that will affect all of the us employed in the commercial sector by giving our jobs to volunteers. The Southport Report is a pander to Cameron's big society drive of which 'localism' is a crucial element, and plays right into the hands of the likes of Melton. I'm sorry to say that we're just about to be sold right up the river. |
