it will only take half the companies because they will get all the quality staff

Excellent... You and others now have your road map...
And yes it would be nice to know what your version of here and there is I have to do all the hard sums just now.. :face-kiss:

"they will get all the quality staff" and when that matters... it may just work

First you need enough staff so that you can pack out your workforces with the quality ones? There aren't enough staff kicking around at the moment anyway, and I haven't noticed anyone rushing to pay more to employ their services.
Basic business sense to put the wages up, then the 10% or whatever that the archaeological contractor creams off the top ('overheads') goes up too, however no one seems to have told the clients who actually provide the cash

clients have nothing to do with it, consultants have nothing to do with it either.
if you paid 12% more than next door do, you would get their quality staff soon enough and they would be left with the dross - you should know that

Haha, I didn't expect you to do the sums. I have looked at the numbers myself although I don't have all the figures, and it's not really my area of expertise. I think it is something the CIfA should do or pay someone to do.
Here = what the majority of archaeologists are getting now for the level of responsibilty that they have.
There = What archaeologists should be getting in relation to equivellent occupation subject to increases over time in line with annual average pay increases.
What is the average annual pay increase in the uk at the moment? Does anyone know? I have found differing levels betweem 2% and 3.2%

What, and pay the quality staff to hang around the office while another outfit gets all the contracts with the 'less good' staff for 12% less?
The clients couldn't (generally) give a monkey's about quality if they can get it cheaper
Oh, and actually we have an excellent workforce at the moment - they seem to like hanging around for some reason, not been too many losses over the last couple of years - but then BAJR's handy table a page or two back showed that we pay better than some ROs

thats a curious business model that relies on numbers and not on skills or efficiency.
