I admit that my knowledge base of Archaeology is limited to the Time Team and the Discovery channel but even I can accept the importance of this subject, not just in historical value but in modern day practice such as forensics.
Just another thought and not trying to make personal insults. I seem to remember reading somewhere that Alan Melton had a bad experience whilst working as a brickie, could be he contracted an allergic reaction to trowels, if not, maybe he could get one out the shed and muck in, who knows he may even learn something.

I think if we could get Alan Melton out there on a site and seeing what it takes, and what it means to the public, then he may see the worth - and how it is worth fighting for!
You will see that I have steered away from insults, and am trying to remain in a polite dialogue.
Mike Heyworth also kept clear of some easy body blows and that is what is better than a traded insult. Stay calm, and produce a reasonable argument, backed up by real facts. the rest speaks for itself.
Good to see more people comments. and welcome to BAJR :face-approve: This perhaps shows that archaeology is a broad church and always should be.

Just sent the story to Private Eye, but glad they already have it. Looking forward to reading about the downfall in the next issue. However he must be congratulated on uniting all archaeology/heritage industry people against him. Maybe it was an attempt by the big Pickles to sound out the feeling on ammending the law on archaeological investigation. If so, we must show how strong we are. I have written to Avaas petitions asking for their support, although I suspect they have bigger fish to fry. We shall see.

We’ve contacted the relevant bodies in Parliament and are awaiting briefing documents on the upcoming Localism bill, to which Mr Melton was alluding during his speech. I also met Mr Eric Pickles, the Secretary of State for the DCLG, who said that Mr Melton’s comments were unfounded and seems to have become rather annoyed by the matter, please note the nature of this meeting was informal and does not amount to an official statement on the matter. I will update you as soon as I know more.

If the Draft NPPF framework comes into being in the format that Jack has posted, I thingk I could live with it. It seems to take the sting out of the Melton's of this world....and enshrine some of the principles of PPS5 regarding HERs etc....
