Quote:I opposed it since I felt that the original name defined the area of special
interest well.
me to,o why the f are you still ythere. they should have called it curators since the begining.
but this is a blind lie
Quote:The Institute of Field Archaeologists was founded in 1984 with the aim of
promoting high standards of practice by all those involved with the
investigation and curation of the archaeological resource.
Standard and guidance for archaeological advice by historic environment services - Martin Locock - 4th March 2012
Not a lie.
The Memorandum of Association states : "3. The objects for which the Institute are established are to advance the practice of field archaeology, and allied disciplines, to define and maintain proper professional standards and ethics in training and education in field archaeology, in the execution and supervision of work, and in the conservation of the archaeological heritage..."
Standard and guidance for archaeological advice by historic environment services - Unitof1 - 5th March 2012
I take it all back. It is a pity that they used the words archaeology and field. I bet they had wished they had left them out and started out as
"3. The objects for which the Institute are established are to advance the practice of the Historic environment.
This would have saved the confusing use of a lot of commas within commas and left out the confusion that "conservation of the archaeological heritage" had anything to do with museums.

Unitof1 Wrote:...anyone who finds value from the physical examination of the past and I like to get that definition as close to those who have a trowel in their hand.....or anybody I say is an archaeologist....
trowel, jcb, metal detector, gardener, truffling pig - an endless and meaningless list . why then 'finds value' when this could apply to a timeteam viewer who never filled out a context sheet or has any insurance?
Standard and guidance for archaeological advice by historic environment services - Unitof1 - 6th March 2012
Quote:[SIZE=3]i'm not sure you can by any of your definition call yourself an archaeologist

although I can appreciate that timett viewers may feel that they are engaged in some physical examination I don?t really count it as physical examination but in my hands or any other archaeologist yes trowel, jcb, metal detector, gardener, truffling pig (mine?s a dog) are all legit physical examination tools although the gardener may be subject to extreme contempt and exploitation. Whats a context sheet and what insurance are you taking about? As you can appreciate for the topic matters yes curators sorry advisors are lumped in with the timett although I would add an I and advisors are most defiantly not archaeologists in my understanding of any original principle attempts to define an archaeologist.
Standard and guidance for archaeological advice by historic environment services - P Prentice - 6th March 2012
so when you have hung up your jcb and the dog wont come back and your spleen just wont any more - will you no longer be an archaeologist?
Standard and guidance for archaeological advice by historic environment services - Unitof1 - 6th March 2012
what you mean still be an archaeologist and an advisor as well. pretty much impossible.
Possibly if you were museum based and if it was in the remit of that museum to curate what ever archaeology needed curation and you were taking responsibility for the conservation of the archaeological heritage. Thing about advice given to local aurhorities or any other is that it is advice to a politic. Maybe it would make more sense to me if actually the archaeologist was a member of the planning committe but I havent worked out what curum would be necessary. The more I think about this stupid advice standard is the museum aspect of archaeology. We have got away in commercial archaeology with taking very little responsibility for the museuming of archaeology and let the "advisors" go about pretending that they were curators, a museum term, and in control when thay are not. what business is the archive of them, business being the opperative word?

no slothrop - i mean that if you define an archaeologist by hands-on 'physical examination' then you leave out a host of people who quite possibly contribute more to 'study' than your average looteroldladyfleecingshameaboutthethousandyearreicheevaluationspecialist

You don’t getit do you, we are now in the era of the professional field archaeologist. These evil field archaeologists produce everything that comes from the field, period. If those that want to study, let them, let them study everything and anything, they have no need to call themselves field archaeologists but I would like to know what they can produce without a field archaeologist, we got standards and codes you know.
