Yes, and if this government gets their way public and civil servants won't have a final salary scheme either ! Even with civil service pensions you only get the maximum benefits (ie. 50% of final salary) if you get in the full 40 years service.
Given the many recent cases of people getting ripped off and losing some or all of their pensions, both company and private (such as those with Equitable Life in the 1990s) it is hardly surprising that Merc hold the personal point of view he stated above.
Tax relief or not, I would have to be persuaded that a particulary private pension or company pension scheme would be the best thing for me personally, but before I make any decisions I would, of course, take advice, as I said earlier.

Pensions are frightening - I think it is vital to have one, but at the same time recent scandals and current crisis make them a big source of worry. At one time, they had the opposite effect - a nice warm glow of anticipated security in old age.
I believe that the IFA's proposed package of reforms to their salary minima include employer contributions to a pension scheme, or else financial compensation in the salary (presumably to enable the employee to make larger personal contributions).

An educated workforce is a stronger workforce. Comparison of employers is one of the best ways of improving things. If some of the IMO 'bad employment practice' I complain about hits a little close to home then too bad.
I have been guilty of breaking the age old rule of not talking about how much you earn, not in a desire to brag, but to demonstrate that it is possible to pay (relatively) well and give staff some security, even in a competitive market. Anyone who argues otherwise is deluded or lying.
Having broken the rule I guess I've attracted the "evil eye" or other such b****cks. Why am I surprised then that employers find it so easy to treat staff badly?

Dead right - people should be making use of the knowledge that some units can pay well(ish). Maybe asking why if some can pay well, all can't might be a good start. A bit of openess in the whole issue of wages should be an opportunity to campaign for change, not to mither about contributors' desire for anonymity....

I remember those Anfield Iron "he wasn't born, he was quarried" (some Scotsman) style tackles well.
Fortunately we played alongside each other and none of them were ever directed at me, not in competitive games anyway.
I pensioned myself off in 2000, couldn't catch the nippers anymore.
I once saw Tommy Smith play by the way. Scary, but not as scary as Souness.

None of my posts about your employer were in any way a personal attack towards you. You have become a very vocal defender of your company, and that is why I asked you about the holiday pay ruling, a subject you had written about in the past. I do not however seek a personal confrontation with any of the companies (except my own)with whom I disagree with their employment practices, including yours.
I will admit I have fallen foul of the AUP in that orgy of name calling. I will not do so again. Subsequent spars between us have been about facts. Including holiday pay in a wage is considered 'bad employment practice' by the European Court. Not just me.
Are you perhaps assuming that all of my criticisms are about your company? If so, you are mistaken, most of my examples are from elsewhere. Don't take it so personally.
