I liked the use of halogen lamps on site during the daytime, so useful

What a load of tosh.

The first five minutes:
No brief, no specification, no WSI, no risk assessment, no county archaeologist for that matter, no PPE, no health and safety, unshored trenches, no recording, pulling things out of the ground in a most un-archaeological fashion, no apparent stratigraphy, a tent (!) instead of a portacabin, ability to instantly identify 'damascene steel' by eye from a (presumably corroded) fragment of ferrous material...

The next five minutes:
Unbelievably lavish post-ex facilities, survival of WOOD and METAL and FABRIC in the same context (???), team members' ability to do dendro AND fabric AND metal conservation ALL AT THE SAME TIME, instantaneous C14 results (from where? by fax in the middle of the night?)...

And then it went on and on and on, until the final denoument which was utterly absurd. If I know anything about dovecotes in Herefordshire it is that the vast caverns beneath them which contain holy crosses are usually damp. Like eggbasket, if felt that:

Quote:quote:It was like a car crash. I could not tear my eyes away even as I wished to tear them out. Why else did I watch it to the end?

Even as drama it was pretty awful. All of the characters were flat and wooden. The only redeeming feature was the character of Professor 'Dolly' Parton, who reminded me of a university archaeologist from a city near to Bath. This programme has set back the public face of archaeology for another 15 years.

I was watching from behind the sofa. Agreed it was exceptionally poor telly (plot/dialogue/effects/characters etc), but honestly, if it was made procedurally realistic, who would watch?

I suppose somewhere on the net, we could find communities of apoplectic cryptozoologists, wailing over Primeval and fulminating about how "walruses couldn't possibly have evolved into that form because...". I'm also reasonably sure that Louise Redknapp is much better behaved than those slappers on Footballers Wives, A&E departments aren't like Holby City and the majority of Timelords definitely AREN'T able to deflect a regeneration into a spare body part in a jar (don't get me started).

It's just telly. We can quietly get on with the real-life stuff in the accepted (if boring) manner, safe in the knowledge that a) we know better and b) nobody cares.

Kel... you win the prize! The summation was masterful Big Grin

still... could be worse... Britarch seems to have gone down the line of general offence! [:0]

As you say... real life.... gawd bless it... in all its dull glory!

No different from their usual reactions thenBig Grin

Very good and quite funny summary of the programme here http://kiasa.org/

'...the majority of Timelords definitely AREN'T able to deflect a regeneration into a spare body part in a jar...'

Marrying previous thread of Doctor Who points and laughs at archaeologists with this one produces 'archaeologists point and laugh at TV archaeologists', but will unfortunately probably lead to 'everyone else points and laughs at archaeologists'. Damn.

I can't wait to see Bonekickers now and hence forth use it as a model for my working week. Any chance of someone producing some 'Sh1tkickers' T-shirts in the appropriate font? If I'm going to have people asking even more daft questions than usual for the next few weeks I might as well roll with it.

Working in a multi-disciplinary office, it's been fun listening to non-archaeology colleagues trying to work out which of our team best matches the characters......Big Grin

I have to admit that I haven't seen it (I was off waving longswords around myself last night![:I]), but when the stuff about it 1st came out, the fact that it was from the same people as 'Spooks' tended to push me in the direction of thinking it was going to be pretty un-representative of reality. I can still remember some of the comments from ex-MI5 people after that started.......

"I can still remember some of the comments from ex-MI5 people after that started......."

Thats an impressively multi-disciplinary office oldgirl.

I can't get over how much like Dr Who it was. I don't really watch much BBC because it's usually sh**e at drama. Is it all like this? Is this really aimed at adults? Dr. Who is clearly for kids and it looked identical minus the rubber masks.[?]
