In case people havent noticed prices have fallen. A watching brief which makes UKP 50 profit is better than no profit at all.

I am currently exploring applying for grants in my patch that will need work to be done by units and making sure that council developments are using the local units.

More seriously though there has been a steep drop off in planning applications in the major growth area in the south east in which I work. So, if it's going that way here lord knows what it is like in the north. Landbanking will not balance it out. A downturn is just that. Tighten belts, doomed we're all etc...

In one of the areas I cover one of the council sub contractor 'best values' is judged against the employment of residents who live within the district. They do sometimes need to be reminded of this.

On the bright side though, we in England and Wales will have plenty of spare time in which to make the adjustments necessitated by the forthcoming Heritage Act.
In Scotland where such fripperies are (rightly) deemed unecessary (if it ain't broke etc), they'll presumably get on with doing something truly useful such as Scotlands Rural Past or the Bute survey while we faff around rewriting laws so that they do much the same as before. Hmmmm.... Passes the time though eh?
If confused, write to hprt@english-heritage.org.uk and ask them why your house isn't going to be listed anymore.

I would imagine that whilst things could get better in the UK, being an archaeologist in Rekjavik is probably not the best of jobs at the moment....

It might not be too bad as long as things pick up next year. The digging season is v. short up there. So now would be post-ex time. But yeah, it's probably a worrying time for anyone in Iceland. That said, there was a big scandal about a large dig in the centre of Reykjavik going to a foreign concern earlier this year. I'll try and find a link about that when I've got a mo'
