BAJR Award - HERs online - BAJR Host - 1st April 2009 Lets GO National. There are lots of SMRs NMRs and resources out there that deserve more coverage, and at a suggestion from one county ( thanks to you!) I am considering a press release that uses this fun poll (yup Vulpes I agree , it is all a bit of fun!) to let more people know about everything from ADS to county SMRs and HERS ... resources and guides, timetrails and education downloads... games and public participation... All thanks to the info held in HERs and NMRs What you think?? :face-huh: "Entrepreneurs are simply those who understand that there is little difference between obstacle and opportunity and are able to turn both to their advantage." Niccolo Machiavelli BAJR Award - HERs online - vulpes - 1st April 2009 It clearly is fun BAJR but that doesn't make it right!![:p] BAJR Award - HERs online - BAJR Host - 1st April 2009 You are awful... [:p] perhaps we should just all wear sackcloth and ashes, beat ourselves with nettles and chant... NO FUN NO FUN NO FUN.. This is more about highlighting HERs online than any desire to say that one is better than another.. it is about getting people looking.. go on... have a bit of fun. You know you want to. "Entrepreneurs are simply those who understand that there is little difference between obstacle and opportunity and are able to turn both to their advantage." Niccolo Machiavelli BAJR Award - HERs online - vulpes - 1st April 2009 I know that, and you know i know that. Which is why I've voted twice for the wonderful Highland HER, the only one on there with records generated by my own fair hand! You can't get better than that BAJR! [:o)] BAJR Award - HERs online - BAJR Host - 1st April 2009 I knew you knew that i knew that you knew that they knew that th... hold on.. I er.. I knew you would be fun! "Entrepreneurs are simply those who understand that there is little difference between obstacle and opportunity and are able to turn both to their advantage." Niccolo Machiavelli BAJR Award - HERs online - knapofhowar - 1st April 2009 going national would be interesting. certainly, i think more audience research of what people actually want rather than what archaeologists think people want is very badly needed. do people want records? or more thematic content? what do they visit an online her for? it is surprising that despite the money put in by the hlf amongst others, the answer to these questions remain elusive. it would be useful to hear of any audience research accompanying these sites, particular with audiences who don't know/make use of her services already. has anyone published anything? BAJR Award - HERs online - sheep - 2nd April 2009 In my experience what people want is records. People are inherently curious and they want to know that they're seeing everything. They really don't like feeling that information is being held back or "dumbed down". I know that at least one of the sites listed did a lot of audience research before and during the online development, but nothing published as far as I'm aware. BAJR Award - HERs online - Dirty Dave Lincoln - 3rd April 2009 With so many voting, i'd have thought more than just 14 of us would have voted for Norfolk- but it's still early days yet!:face-approve: BAJR Award - HERs online - sheep - 3rd April 2009 Well I agree with vulpes for what it's worth, about it being about turnout more than anything. So isn't anyone going to post a link to this on Britarch? Actually, shouldn't BAJR host be doing that?? BAJR Award - HERs online - BAJR Host - 6th April 2009 All going along nicely..as a piece of fun... However, has anyone got any constructive comments about the sites? :face-huh: As to me posting on Britarch... stopped my account after some personal attacks. I disagree with the records only theory... I may as well read a shopping list or dictionary. it i context, story, gentle guidance to trails and interpretation while still keeping the sense of personal investigation. Taking Cheshire for example.. there are great sections.. Places to visit (however a bit more than the SMR entry would be useful) the fact sheets are not bad either. In East Lothian, we created 2 Heritage Explorer Maps, covering Prehistoric to 1500 and 1500 ? present. Picking out over 150 sites to visit with descriptions and directions within themes. Anyway?. This next bit is true of most online SMR/HERs Just the records that you have to open one at a time, yawn? then see where it was found, then click back? then search, then The Cheshire system I have to select from a vast list of items.. (all FISH compliant.. all MIDAS terms etc? but to the user.. whats all this then? ) Surrey has it not bad at all .. with a decent map attached to the record, but again? I want to ?see? all axes from the bronze age.. not have to go through each one in turn. Think about it? at the council office, you have a GIS system that you can interrogate? so why put this strait jacket on data when translating it online. Who is the user? Is it a professional (should they be?) is it an amateur researcher? A school? A person looking at their locality? A nighthawk? What info do you need? What don?t you? Many HERs allow search by HER number?. If you know that? do you not already know about it? Perhaps its just me? though how I would know about MEL13546 without knowing what sort of site it is, where it is and what its called baffles me.. #61514; Come and give comment?. Its all useful Mapping is getting better.. but in reality this is the weakest spot on all ... I want to be able to look for roman forts... and then match that against another layer with medieval villages.. and see the connection (or not) "Entrepreneurs are simply those who understand that there is little difference between obstacle and opportunity and are able to turn both to their advantage."
