Dilemma - Drunky - 11th June 2009
Your job isn't your life, it's much eaiser do things outside work, if your settled in a area and have a steady wage coming in. I don't want to even risk taking evening classes in subjects that could help me in work for fear of not being able to commit the time.

I've got a similar dilemma going on at the moment, although the present job isn't as bad as the one you have!
The only thing I can say is, take a look at what you want to be doing in the future and what's important to you now. For example: If what's important to you right now are the things you do outside work (whether family, friends, activities etc) and the new job will take you away from that, are there balancing advantages to the new job?
Also, are you grasping at this because it's the first opportunity to get back into archaeology? Would you have even looked at this job a couple of years ago?
Anyway, good luck with your decision either way. Hosty is right about what is life but for living, but although work is where we spend alot of our time, it's not all we do. My biggest problem has been the fact that for years, when asked to describe myself, 'I'm an archaeologist' has been part of that description. I've cheated recently and used 'normally I'm an archaeologist'......

Well after much deliberation i have decided to throw caution to the wind and accept this new position. After all i feel that if i dont i will slowly rot at my desk and become drone number 1066. If it does not work out then i will put it down to experience and move on. Thanks for the advice everyone.

I think its time that a whole new generation of archaeologists were introduced to the book 'The Dice Man' which all of us diggers of a certain age, read, inwardly digested and recirculated during the 1980s. The basic principle underlying Dice Man philosophy is that all decision making is a matter of chance. Right or wrong the important thing is to make a decision (even if it involves the randomness of tossing a coin, cutting cards, rolling dice) and to not prevaricate. I didn't get where I am today by ever making a wise decision.......

I thought the dice man was a bit selfish didn't really considered how his decisions effect other people,
But it is a good book and the underlying principle has legs

Selfish....I would say he was downright criminal!! But of course he was absolved because he never made a conscious decision. Every decision was randomly chosen through means of chance.....
