Just to be awkward, but without disagreeing with what's been said, I would point out that there is also of duty of care on teh part of the employee (both to him/herself and to others). In short, I suppose, if it hurts, stop for a rest and/or tell your employer.

OK I know, easier said than done!

A serious issue that needs adressing.. I am crocked at the momnet from back pain (suffered 21 years ago when I was a 17 year old digger) If only I had been trained in the correct use of shovels and wheel barrows... it sounds silly... just how difficult is it to use a shovel!!... Problem is it is a problem... all tool use has to be learned and taught right from the start... I feel a campaign and a serious poll coming on.

David just wait till you are 47. Some days I simply cannot bend or lift anything. My wife has to carry everything. I am having to sell my sports car because sitting in it brings on my bad back

Seriously how many of us do have these problems in our back and in our knees.

How about a BAJR poll -
I have been off work with back pain
I have had treatment for a bad back
I am too young for this to have developed
I always thought archaeologists were pretty spineless

I know how to use tools, lift weights, I work for a unit which pays attention to H&S, diggers problems etc but still needed 2 months off sick last year to recover from a major back problem (and its still pretty buggered). I think, for some people at any rate, it just inevitable that we'll get problems. And there's another point.. how many diggers have contracts which enable them to take that amount of time off sick for genuine problems?

On the plus side though is that our work van is the only thing i can drive sitting upright in the correct posture. If only they'd let me take it home.... although i dont think the wife would be too impressed.

I tried lying down and it was very comfortable but it seemed a bit dangerous.
