Mercenary..... Now I was led to believe that archaeologists were intelligent people. Please don`t tell me that a few of them are turning into apprentice bigots! Mind you, each to their own. Would love a right-winger on my site.....hav`nt reduced any amoeba to tears for ages........
I do agree though, plenty of people are questioning the validity of alcohol and baccy. Tiz a good thing in my view. On the dippy hippy front, I feel that archaeology needs as wide a spectrum of ideological stances as possible. Nothing worse than a myopic approach...
p.s I agree with the "Camp X-Ray" idea on condition that those interned consist of individuals responsible for foreign policies......

Speaking as a Graudian reading veggie ex smoker hippy dippy homebrew hippy, I agree that there should be more of me out there. I'm usually right about everything.....
Mind you, sit hut debates can always be fun, espcially with right wing rural types.
but the more the merrier. I've met some right characters in archaeology, usually for them to tell me stories about the OLD days, when people knew how to be properly eccentric...
P.S. destroyer, why do Veggies put you off having a site barbecue? I reckon your colleagues must be right killjoys if they stop you doing that.

Personally I welcome the gradual disappearance of the Guardian-reading, "left-wing" and "alternative" classes on site anyway. Mostly they were made up of rather conventional middle-class people utterly denying their roots and spouting a load of reactionary claptrap. We have a jokey "alternative" guy at my place of work - ageing Goth, wears the black uniform and rails against the iniquities of the capitalist, free-market system. This would be fine from a genuine working-class individual, but considering he went to one of the most prestigious public schools in the region, has bought a house with Daddy's money and pays a nominal mortgage on it shows how deep his "convictions" run - all the way back to a sense of guilt at growing up privileged. Although a slightly extreme example I remember many more people of a similar hypocritical bent.If more people on site are not spouting this b*llsh*t then good.
No offence to Guardian readers btw - a good newspaper, even though it's not my rag of choice.

The reason for the 'disapearance' of the 'left wingers' is that they have all 'gone to get better jobs'. Capitalism being what it is, us hippy types need plenty of moolah to keep us in sandals, muesli and probiotic yogurt.
but seriously, people in archaeology, particularly itinerant diggers often like it because of the unconventionality, movin around and meeting folk. I don't reckon you'll see a site of Daily Mail carbon copies anytime soon. All the really annoying ones I knew at Uni are all at SMR's/County jobs already[:I]

Oxbeast - you and I need to have an arguement. I am always right as well.
Anyway, whatever the reasons it doesnt really matter if we're losing some of the left wing/alternative bias to the digging fraternity. Having a couple of neocon fascists on site as well is always a bonus - nothing makes shovelling 6 inches of dirt off 500sqm of site go quicker than a blazing row.

Hey Roy why do you have to be working class to rail against the iniquities of the capitalist free market system? I'm thoroughly middle class (not proud, just realistic) but not at all priviledged. I can't afford a house and didn't go to public school, and look at the comedy career I ended up with

Is the reason diggers dont drink and smoke so much these days is cost. Smoking 20 day costs ?1800 a year. Three pints a night ?3000 a year.
