The mails so far suggest that the Safe Pass scheme is treated differently by different employers. I can understand why an emnployer might ask for pre-qualified staff, but it might be useful if on BAJR adverts they stated whether they would be willing to bear the cost of Safe Pass training for any applicants who don't currnetly hold the certificate. It would only be one half line extra on the advert, 'Safe pass training provided', but I guess if the situation were so cut and dried, they wouldn't be asking for pre-qualified staff!
Does anyone know whether it is just archaeologists who fall into the trap of having to pay for their own H&S training? Do employers in ireland generally bear the cost for other staff i.e construction workers? Does the Irish equivalant of the IFA have a view on this subject?

I speak to him when the occasion arises.
I'm not sure if he's your man though as he is one of the state archaeologists working for the DoE and while he's involved with IAI, he would not be involved in commercial archaeology, except at a curatorial level.
If you get a list of questions, I can chase down the answers at this end if you or anyone else wants.
Another contact in IAI that might be worth a try would be Stuart Elder, who is invloved in commercial archaeology.

I am afraid the IAI has no position on this... but now it has been brought to their attention, it is seen that as a stop gap until such times as a position and potential for creating an IAI training system... BAJR will now only carry adverts that have the words Safe Pass Preffered, but the Companies will be reminded that as employees, it is the duty of the employer to provide the means for thier staff to carry out teh work, whether that is a safe pass or a shovel... you very rarely see adverts that ask archaeologists to bring their own context sheets after all.
It is hoped that the IAI will create the enviroment where all companies are on a level playing field, and after all. it may be cut throat... but there is a duty in employment law to provide employees with teh means for the job.#

They can naff off. More of the rubbish I've heard on the grapevine about Irish units...
I dunno if the company gets in trouble, the health and safety guys come out and make everyone who doesn't have it leave site, and I've heard this happening on construction sites too - most of the course is irrelevant to archaeology anyhow
