Where have all the good shovels gone? - destroyer - 30th July 2005 shovels?? can get shovels anywhere. what about hoes - good proper hoes with long handles and strong wide heads at the right angle, so i can lovingly clean vast expanses of sand, with no discomfort for my poor and abused back, in a search for the rare, isolated, miscellaneous and undatable pits which as legend has it (ie the PO) once existed across the landscape. sorry, got a bit carried away there.... but we can't seem to replace our hoes for love nor money Where have all the good shovels gone? - Beki - 31st July 2005 Hoe's! I'd forgotten about the quest to find the right hoe...there is usually only 1 excellent hoe in a group of hundreds lurking in the darkest corner of the tool store...and you always find that the best hoe's are the ones that are really old... they don't make em like they used to Where have all the good shovels gone? - destroyer - 2nd August 2005 no they dont....thinking about it one of the best mattocks we have appears to be early 20th century in date and was actually excavated out of a field ditch somewhere or other Where have all the good shovels gone? - Alfie - 3rd August 2005 Line levels theres another one. I went to stock up the other day and no one does 'em anymore. Its all laser this and laser that, anyone would think you want the bloody string level. Where have all the good shovels gone? - star-nosed mole - 3rd August 2005 Try York Survey Supplies - they have a website and sell lovely bright red line levels - they stand out from the mud! [:I] There's also a shop on one of York's main high streets that's very good for personal equipment - several different types of line level, flashy tape measures, leaf trowels etc. Can't remember what its called but it's just an ordinary independant hardware/ DIY shop but pretty cheap and good quality stuff! Tubal Cain - can't recommend them highly enough for shovels etc. Run by an actual archaeologist who was in my year at uni, so should really know their stuff! Where have all the good shovels gone? - mercenary - 3rd August 2005 The shop is called Barnitts, and is by far the best hardware shop I've ever seen. Sadly, they don't sell shovels. Looked at the Tubal Cain site and I agree the equipment looks good. Goin' to bite the bullet and order a shovel. It's only 12 quid after all. What price a decent shovel and a happy back! Where have all the good shovels gone? - Sith - 8th August 2005 Ah yes... Barnitts. Have spent a happy hour or ten in there, staring at interesting and expensive tools for peculiar jobs, and also at the seemingly infinite number of rooms and departments. And does anyone remember buying trowels from Stubbs ancient premises on Fossgate, staffed by old blokes in brown coats? ("No!.. FORK HANDLES, handles for forks!") |
