think i might have been on site with the same gonk academic troll, unless there is unfortunately more than one...

Tell you what I was thinking G. was to get in touch with Arrow Rock Radio and see if they might not be interested in sponsoring said trowel holster ('troffel-holster' in Dutch). For a small piece of product placement we could all be wearing these things for free.

I suppose if Arrow turn us down, there is always the possibility of a 'unit logo' on a troffel-holster, just to match with the vis-vest I suppose, whereas baler twine is a bit limited in that respect, although counties with a plethora of the stuff (thinking East Anglia here) could maybe have their own distinct colour range, rather than just the normal orange or blue.

Worst thing though would be units that kept supplies of 'used' trowel-holders for short-term contract staff. How would you know what previous user had 'kept' in it. (Anything that hangs that close to the ground can't be healthy second-time round!!)

Apologies for double posting here folks but I just Googled 'trowel holster' and discovered that we are all way behind (US) commerce here.

Marshalltown Company would like to announce several new programs for schools teaching archaeological field methods and skills. As instructors, it is important to motivate students to do their very best. With the "Student Award Program" instructors can recognize an outstanding field school student at the undergraduate or graduate level. Marshalltown will then send, for that student, a certificate of merit, pointing trowel with holster, and a Marshalltown cap at no cost to the instructor, student, or school. The "Tools for Schools Program" allows field school instructors to purchase Marshalltown tools from local vendors and earn matching credits for additional Marshalltown products up to $400 per school per calendar year.

Tools for Schools Program.....I await the first UK unit to sign up and 'reward' their staff with certificate of merit, freebee trowel holster and Marshalltown cap !!

Hmm I am not sure these are meant to be a fashion statement! They are very dark brown leather, and fairly subtly designed. I can see why they may appear a little "poserish" but surely gashed backsides is never a good thing!

Just to digress back into the original thread. If getatrowel was in the line of offering personalised troffel-holsters I would def. be in for one. Perhaps in addition to your 'unit crest' we could introduce gold stripes (1 for Pifa, 2 for Aifa etc) or a black-cross for a conscientious objector. The possiblilities are limitless, am thinking along the lines of my cub scout cooking and atronomy badges; e.g a big gold sieve logo for enviro proficiency, a gold hammock for offical work-shy b****** or a gold skull for osteo-archaeologist...

Also, in an increasingly pressurised world with anonymous teams of hi-vied archies parading accross the landscape; the colours of baler twine should be expanded into full unit kits to assist county archs in rapid identification (thinking along the lines of the quidditch world cup here) e.g. big straw hats, an ear of corn and gingham for the Norfolk Unit, or a full sheep skin up here in the North Pennines. Am I onto something?

On, rather than onto, something I think!Big Grin A secret logo under the PIFA stripes on the holster for BAJR contributors as well. How about a black leather pen holster for consultants? Complete with skull and crossbones... And a special belt attachment, like those keyring things, for curators to clip their clipboard onto.

I'm not a back pocket enthusiast, I favour the leg pocket of combats. Seems safer.

We owe the dead nothing but the truth.

Trowel Holsters - getatrowel - 11th March 2006

Wow think of the potential (:

We are aware of Marshalltown's holsters - but the difference is, as far as I know, they are mass-produced. The ones we are thinking of introducing are handmade by Shetland craftsmen. It's a world away.

The serious danger of a trowel holster would be the first person who decides to wear two - one on each dodgy hip.

Nobody wants it as much as us! It lies in the hands of the powers that be I am afraid. You will be the first to know..
