Bank Holidays - the invisible man - 27th May 2006

Another suggestion: do not work for employers that include bank holidays in the annual leave entitlement.

In my long and varied, it is extremely unusual in other walks of life. In fact I have only heard of it once and that was a misunderstanding.

We owe the dead nothing but the truth.

So the link given above is the Mystery Company that has been using the IFA RAO Logo.

Well who would have thought it ?

Bank Holidays - Real Job - 29th May 2006

After a bit more digging, I have found the Labour Party's own website and its published intention to extend holiday entitlement to include bank holidays http://www.labour.org.uk/index.php?id=news&ux_news_id=workersbenefit&tx_pagephpcontentcached_pi1%5Bpage_name%5D=work

The key sentence is: "With Labour every full-time worker will be entitled to 28 days paid holiday - including the time for bank holidays. This is just one example of Labour's commitment to give more help and support to hard working families."

So it does seem as though this change is coming... but we are still waiting (the article/propaganda is dated 28 March 2005).

Further to this is a speech on the same day by Ian McCartny MP (Lab):

"Labour stands for 8 days bank holidays in addition to 20 days paid holidays. 28 days under Labour... One of these days, if you all keep supporting Labour, you might even get your bank holidays off."

Rather a strange qualifying sentence, but the intention has been clearly stated.

And the BBC report on the same - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4387199.stm

P.S., I quite agree Invisible Man, I have done more jobs than just archaeology and the only time I had to endure the same lack of bank holidays was in the security sector (hardly reknowned for good employment practice). That includes retail, call centre and construction industries.

Bank Holidays - oldgirl - 30th May 2006

Bank Holidays are not automatically in addition to the 20 days.

This link explains the situation :

Bank Holidays - simon johnson - 31st May 2006

people may be interested to note that all full-time employees at PCA (Lincoln)recieve bank holidays in addition to their leave entitlement of 20-22 days depending on grade. Wish it were more.

I would like to extend this to temporary workers as well, but unfortunately I have to include bank holidays as part of the 20 day minimum. The main reason for this is simply the commercial framework we work in. In simple terms, from a contract point of view, holiday is an overhead that needs factoring in; the higher the overheads, the more expensive the quote, the less likely we are to win the contract, more likely I have to make someone redundant.

Most other unit managers would agree, to a greater or lesser extent, and thus the only way to improve this is, as Peter writes, to establish a national framework.

At least I am upfront with what is on offer, but please don't assume that people in my position are seeking to take advantage of diggers: I don't know anybody who doesn't wan't the terms and conditions of the whole 'proffession' improved.

Bank Holidays - voice of reason - 1st June 2006

Hmmm - we somehow manage to pay people for Bank Holidays on top of 20 days holiday - it's not that hard and we still turn a shilling or two. Go on, make the leap, or be left behind. It really won't break you if you are a well-run and successful company. The better the conditions we try to offer, the more likely staff are to come and work for us in the current climate is how we see it, as well as not seeing two classes of staff. There's also the inescapable fact that you will be made to do it eventually, so why not be ahead of the game instead of behind?

Bank Holidays - simon johnson - 1st June 2006

Wish I could, voice of reason, and I do hope that we will be forced to do it in due course. The main reason why I feel we can't take the jump unilaterally, is the 'micro-economy' we are working in. We are based in Lincolnshire and there are a great number of units, freelancers and consultants all after the same contracts with differing sizes of overheads. As things stand, we are only winning the minimum number contracts needed to maintain the fulltime positions we already have; we are trying to penetrate 'the market' beyond our traditional stomping ground, but progress is slow.

If you have any suggestions or are willing to share your experiences, however, I would be interested in talking with you.

Nice to see PCA (Lincs) are being as tight-fisted as ever and looking after their employees.

Bank Holidays - drpeterwardle - 1st June 2006

I think you find the industry standard is that they are included in the 20 days. This is clear in the SCAUM manual.

Bank Holidays - mercenary - 2nd June 2006

That's interesting. Perhaps I'm in another industry, because my last six archaeological employers have had 20 days annual leave in addition to bank holidays. Doesn't surprise me in the slightest that SCAUM would like us to believe otherwise.}Smile}Smile}Smile
