Another Detecting find changes perception of Anglo Saxon Britian - garybrun - 26th September 2009 HI diggingthedirt. I can tell you that there are thousands of people with metal detectors who are willing to help archaeologists and are as fascinated in their history as archaeologists are. There are many specialists in small finds. Take a look at ukdfd.co.uk and the work that goes on there... all unpaid and high quality. I finally can see that the message is getting out too both sides of equation and pre misconceptions are being alleviated. Another Detecting find changes perception of Anglo Saxon Britian - BAJR Host - 26th September 2009 http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/article6848119.ece Just been reading more about it.. and it is sad, that the farmer must express his feelings in such a way. But its not about the money --- though I know how I would feel if I was offered even 100k! would I say... no no.... I'm fine! :face-confused: Ho-Hum... Gold does indeed turn people funny! :face-plain: However, later on in the report... we see why it was found! THe plouging was recent.. and the items were found on a bit of a mound - probably easier for the hoard depositor to find it again! However, one has to ask.... Bronze Age barrow?? Another Detecting find changes perception of Anglo Saxon Britian - garybrun - 26th September 2009 In reality David the sad part about this is that there lives would not be the same again. The press have once again used "sensationality" and released the farmers names .. which means he wont get any piece whatsoever with 1000's calling him for permission to detect on his land and also other who wont even bother asking. The only way to stop this I believe (since the archeologists have done such an exhaustive survey) is for the farmer to open up his land for a rally at ?50 a ticket for charity. This way everyone will get to know there is nothing there... and he can once again get back to normality. Its a sad situation... but once gold fever gets a grip your stuffed. Another Detecting find changes perception of Anglo Saxon Britian - TheDoc - 27th September 2009 Granted that the farmer is justified in not wanting the precise location revealed too soon, but I'm not sure how realistic it was to expect such a find to be kept "low key" for very long. Hopefully the money thing will not overshadow too much the real value of these objects. :face-huh: Another Detecting find changes perception of Anglo Saxon Britian - garybrun - 27th September 2009 Im not an archaeologist... but does this look like good excavation practise to you guys?? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5mZlVxu_7rY Another Detecting find changes perception of Anglo Saxon Britian - RedEarth - 27th September 2009 garybrun Wrote:Im not an archaeologist... but does this look like good excavation practise to you guys?? Based on the evidence of a 2 minute or so video on Youtube I couldn't possibly say Gary. Couldn't resist having a dig though could you (pun sort of intended)? Another Detecting find changes perception of Anglo Saxon Britian - garybrun - 27th September 2009 No dig... a serious question. Lets put it this way.... If I as a metal detectorist did this with my spade and trowel would you be horrified and judge me by a 2 minute video? Ive had a look around and seen that it is being judged by a few archaeologists too. Is it me or does it seem people get very protective of their own?? Another Detecting find changes perception of Anglo Saxon Britian - BAJR Host - 27th September 2009 This is not really ready for discussion properly yet... and have to say - its not Gary having a dig. This has been highlighted elsewhere. I myself did wince quite a bit at tugging gold items out a section and a few other moments.. but want to know more first. Give us a chance to learn more. Another Detecting find changes perception of Anglo Saxon Britian - RedEarth - 28th September 2009 garybrun Wrote:No dig... a serious question. I appreciate that it is a serious question, it was just unfortunately phrased as a bit of a dig in my opinion. I don't think I would be particularly concerned by a video of a detectorist working with a spade and trowel - why should I be? Detectorist have far more to get out of it if the goods come out intact! Besides, they (the archaeologists in the video) appear to be removing artefacts from plough soil, in a field which I understand had been recently deep ploughed. If the objects can survive that then they can survive a little tugging. Not to mention the undoubted time pressures they were probably under - I would imagine that there was some concern over the site being looted before they could get finished. I don't think archaeologists are protective enough of their own, although that is a slightly ironic point given how quick some detectorists are to defend their hobby... Another Detecting find changes perception of Anglo Saxon Britian - garybrun - 28th September 2009 As David says... lets wait for more info to come out. Just heard that a 1st century roman lantern has been discovered at another dig by a ditectorist (same as in Pompey) and the FLO has been informed. Have pictures... will post up soon. A beautiful artifact. |
