We already have loads of females in the hobby... some could be better looking though!
Regarding the genital piercings we have the technology and just discriminate them out.
If we do manage to loose one... its quite easy to find again.

It's impossible to post an objection to this image without sounding like a humourless fool. It took me an entire blog post to try and figure it out, and I still couldn't get there. Perhaps someone else can try?????
I just feel uneasy about it. There's the 'it felt so wrong, and yet, it felt so right' thing. But then there's also the 'it felt so wrong, because it bloody well was wrong' thing. I think this might be the latter. I will stand corrected, if anyone else in the site hut can give me a reasoned argument that turns further than page three.

But if you are to ask those women who paved the way for these gals to actually have those jobs, those women who really faced a rough time during the 60s and 70s and in other times in recent history, then a person might consider why the image feels a bit off. Some of those coming to archaeology today and in the past few years perhaps have little knowledge of a world where the glass ceiling was in fact a cement wall. Few women had paying positions in archaeology. I would also suggest that if one were to look at the numbers of university positions in archeology filled by females is significantly lower than those of their male counterparts. In CRM, my experience has been something similar on projects that require a very rigorous terrain, long hours, and being away from home for an extended period. It really comes down to a climate in which, whether conscious or not, there are sexist choices. It seems to me that the image feeds into the idea that the female on a crew is just that. I can laugh at the thought of folks dreaming up the setting for the picture, arranging a location and costume for the event, and carrying through with the fun of having a copy for each participant, but as with most anthropological settings interpretation depends on your experience, situation, personal exposure (no pun intended) to certain issues, and honestly which side of the fence you sit on.Or maybe if you lean that way, the girls simply turn you on.}

I think the concept is that for fun, for the right reasons and with people more than aware of their actions... this is what both this and the sexy archaeology competition were about. I certainly do not treat our nude beepstick holder as a sexual object :p- its fun... we do get hung up about our bodies a bit much. Though Maggie did ask me to remain fully covered at all times in Croatia so as not to frighten the wildlife :face-crying:
I no longer have the six pack (more the keg) but I would be just as happy to strip off and bare all with but a 4" trowel and an 8m tape as props! Thing is that most people would run screaming from the image tearing ot the eyes that now have the sight burnt into the retina.
Younger folk have all their bits in the right places... and gravity has not been cruel... amazingly I have worked out that women have breasts - I can live with it... we in this society have sexualised them... fine... Page 3 does nothing for me - but for many it is the only time they will see what the top half looks like... oh well... tis their problem.
Yes women are treated unfairly, patronised and often called luv... "alright darlin" - however I am often patronised treated unfairly and called "jocko" We as archaeologists in the field are often treated unfairly, patronised and called diggers etc.... it happens... how we react to it matters, and to my mind, we need to smile from time to time.... I had to agree that my eye was drawn to three elements on the photo - the sieve (tsk) the Trowel (double tsk) and the fact that US hi viz is a different colo(u)r from ours (er... ahem) on closer examination I noticed that the women were having a laugh, they were not pornographic and were portraying a idealised stereotype of 'act sexy for teh camera' indeed one could argue that this image de-constructs and pokes an ironic finger in the eye of sexual exploitation and gender equality all in one glorious hi viz image.
