In which case, people... (ie the people who we supposedly do this for - I know I know... debate) will find out who is really doing archaeology for them. :I
Or will they find out that there is no real reason to suport commercial archaeology as it does not really want them to know whats going on ?? }

There are ways... and indeed, I se opportunity and positive pr... or closed and hiding. I agree about the issue... and indeed know about an imfamous twittergate problem. However, if a company says... ook... lets do this one... with this person... and confirm with client... Job done

Despite all the well-meaning stuff people post on here the vast majority of archaeology (or 'archaeology') carried out in Britain is not actually for the public good, it's because the developer is being dragged kicking and screaming into the process, and is certainly not for public consumption until officially placed in the public domain. I work on plenty of projects where we'd get sued if I posted a 'what I did at work today' on the net. I'd imagine most commercial archaeologist's contracts have clauses along those lines in their contracts, both commercial and employment, so assuming that people stick to them it's going to make for a particularly c**p survey.....
...and to the best of my knowledge you are not allowed to take photos or film inside the dole office or if you're working behind the counter at McDonald seither...so even more archaeologists are going to have a frustrating day...!!

so the only value of archaeology worth entertaining is its ability to sustain the miserable employment of a few old lags who spend most of their time digging trial trenches for commercial concerns who want to make money?
by the time it is evaluated archaeology is in the public domain and you are unlikely to be successfully sued for talking about it, particulalrly as it will undoubtedly be good p r for any erstwhile developer. whether your employer would mind is a different matter but i suggest that they would probably also like the p r opportunity

I think if we keep it to blogs and keep things relatively vague when it comes to names/locations they might not try to screw us. Maybe? I'm not sure on the law as haven't re-read law books in months.

Infringement of client confidentiality would certainly constitute a disciplinary offence at most units, and in sensitive instances could well get people sacked - it's not a joke! Entirely coincidentally (the management were unaware this thread existed) my crew got a reminder today about what they can and can't stick on Facebook etc, the site isn't exactly secret, but it's one that would attract the *****ic fringe if widely publicised, which would severly p**s-off a useful client who has other archaeological units in their portfolio (ie we can be replaced) making it a significant commercial issue and potentially severely adverse to the career (here, anyway) of anyone committing such an infringement (which is all clearly spelled out in black and white in their contracts, if they've read them)

Seriously though... if this is the case then we will lose a part of archaeology - and make the point to the public that they really don't fit into this part of archaeology - which is fine, but then, become the temporal contamination engineer - Of course, with client permission a designated safe person could talk about the trench they are digging...

yikes.... I love client confidentiality, normally they are not even asked... really... it is assumed... and if you explain it, then they go... oh... you mean it is good pr... ah... go for it!

If this was a reminder of a clause that already exists in your contract of employmen,t then your employer is well within their rights to remind employees on occasions of details that may lead to internal disciplinary action if the terms of the contract are broken.....however if your contract of employment does not contain a clause relevant to the posting of information relevant to your employment on social networking sites, then your employer is bang out of order in suggesting that anyone posting to Facebook might be in breach of their employment contract. I would suggest that you contact your trade union, but I seem to remember from previous postings that in 'Dino land' you neither condone nor feel necessary the need for communal representation. In which case I guess the consequences are predictable....

Watch out for retro fitting the contract to exclude social media as well. " You can't do this" can often be wet ink on the terms and conditions document. A legal case can be made, if you have Union membership - even better, as they can help , where by yourself you could perhaps not win.

I hope that those that will, will, those that won't, won't and those that would if they could, will ask if they can. I love the way (myself included) that archaeologists can find reasons to fail much easier than reasons to celebrate

I think 'dissemination of information without the express permission of the client' pretty much covers it, in whatever medium that dissemination occurs?
There's nothing to stop people saying on the survey that they spent the day digging though :face-approve:

I know exactly what you mean though... and so... for the commercials you can remain an invisible profession. I am being commercial and visible. Its all about choice. Anyway... It is not actually a survey... so to stop any confusion... will people (those that feel able to talk about their day) go along to
