First Commercial Job - Stuart Rathbone - 19th October 2011 @ Kevin I spent much of the last four years teaching American College kids how to use a trowel without jabbing themselves in the eye... See that Harry Potter thing? Damn I couldn't agree with you more! Instant 'promotion' to spoil heap management if y First Commercial Job - BAJR - 20th October 2011 Damn you are good Stuart... Understanding the proces and the end result is important as hell. It explains why having a north arrow on a plan is important.. it explains why cross referencing records is important. why ensuring the photographs should have scales and north arrows as well as "clean" etc... And in reverse, the people at the end of the line, should also experience the field systems, so they understand why the record sheet is covered in mud... why the sample number is hard to read on the tub lid. why the plan does not fit the surveyors digital grid etc... Oh... Did I ever tell you about the latest book I read... it is all about a teenage wizard... oh... I'll get ma coat First Commercial Job - Dinosaur - 20th October 2011 :face-topic: Don't turn into one of those site-zombies wearing headphones all day: a) you'll miss all the fun b) you won't learn anything c) by default you'll get all the c**piest jobs d) you'll get run over by the 30 ton moxy you didn't hear coming First Commercial Job - RedEarth - 20th October 2011 Dinosaur Wrote::face-topic: When you say headphones, do you mean like an ipod or something? Why is anyone being allowed to do that in the first place, if for no other reason than the obvious H&S one that you point out? Otherwise well done for anyone getting a first job in the present climate... keep working hard and you won't go far wrong by the sound of it. First Commercial Job - Land-Escapist - 20th October 2011 aww thanks guys this is really helpful, thanks BAJR so much, having a mosy now! I definitely WONT be listening to music, guarantee that I will miss something or be run over by a JCB, not to mention health and safety issues! I have joined the Diggers Forum, I remember ticking the box the last time I was sent the IFA update form. I love messing with matrices, I was on a dig in summer and I carried round my wee notebook and it is now the filthiest thing ever but so handy to make a note of what Im looking at and exactly what tasks I carried out. I even have harris matrix composer... Im looking forward to the challenge, and getting prepared for all weathers of course... First Commercial Job - kevin wooldridge - 20th October 2011 I guess I were a bit grumpy last night... As mitigation can I suggest 4 topics for site-hut conversation that would probably prompt me to buy YOU a drink....1) Attempting the world Mars Bar eating record (saw someone do 12 once in a lunchtime on a site in London), 2) What is the novel 'Moby Dick' really about?, 3) Why we should all join a trade union right now, 4) Scurrilous gossip about any archaeologist/pseudo archaeologist who has appeared on any form of TV in any capacity at any time in the past 60 years....!! First Commercial Job - Unitof1 - 20th October 2011 Quote:I have been lucky enough to land my first commercial job Now lucks an interesting concept. Possibly you landed the job because you is cheaper than all the experienced diggers out there, possibly blind to all the terms and condition exploitations that you are going to suffer. Care to describe what kind of firm has employed you, to do what and for how long? First Commercial Job - P Prentice - 20th October 2011 be on time, be useful and understand why you are doing it and what you want from it First Commercial Job - Stuart Rathbone - 20th October 2011 @ RedEarth Well you've got headphones on! First Commercial Job - Dirty Dave Lincoln - 20th October 2011 Wax Wrote:Start saving those hard earned wages, think about what you are spending on the drinking ( save save save) even on minimal wages you can still put a bit to one side. Listen to the advice of the old lags, do not get macho about shifting tons of dirt, your back and knees are going to have to last you a life time. Do those little tasks that are so helpful without having to be asked ( cleaning up around the site hut). Invest in Norwegian formula hand cream. Above all have fun this will be one of the best times of your life. This is good advice for you, a few tips on the 'little tasks' mentioned: 1) Knowing what people's preference's are for their tea/coffee are at breaks. 2) Washing up the mugs after break. 3) Emptying someone's barrow for them as you go past them. 4) If you end up in shared self catering, suggest (for example) of putting up bags for recycling of rubbish. 5) Also, be willing to do other folks washing up, as it will be reciprocated. |
