A lot better than how it used to be (when income from 'subsistance' was significantly less than from signing-on), and plenty of us survived that and have managed to make a 'career' in archaeology - and until universities start expending considerably more effort in the direction of teaching practical fieldwork disciplines I'm afraid most new graduates unfortunately come under the heading of 'unskilled labour'
- but isn't this replicating another thread?

This goes hand-in-hand with job adverts no longer specifying 6 months to 2 years of commercial experience - where any amount of university-based digging and fieldwork skills, count for absolutely nothing.
