Help Identifying an Artefact No. 2 - CARTOON REALITY - 10th January 2013 Is it part of something like this? Look at the top part of this device and have a think. Far from a perfect match but we could be getting warm . . .http://www.anchorexpress.com/perko-1-ips-intake-strainer-bronze-made-in-the-usa-0493006plb/ Help Identifying an Artefact No. 2 - Hamish - 10th January 2013 Looks like it is made of bronze. Looks like there is a number 2 stamped on the side. I would like to see the underside - to see if there is a hole or it is solid/flat. Help Identifying an Artefact No. 2 - Digger - 11th January 2013 I like cartoons thinking! Help Identifying an Artefact No. 2 - CARTOON REALITY - 11th January 2013 We still don't have an answer though. I think this should be forwarded to and underwater marine type of forum. And unusual hobbies? How's archaeology? Is it a job? Is it a hobby? It's a jobby. Help Identifying an Artefact No. 2 - CARTOON REALITY - 11th January 2013 Something else just occurred to me . . . is it a scupper ball valve? A drainage valve that only works in one direction (we have something like this on our heating system). . . The ball is now missing - but it allows bilge water to escape from a hull without allowing sea water back in. The hinge bolts are there to allow it be opened occasionally so the ball can be cleaned (bilge water would be full of oil and occasional chunks of decaying rat - so ya gotta keeps da ball clean or it won't work.) Normally this kind of thing would have to be above the water line, if it was below sea level it wouldn't work. I can't find anything that looks quite like it on the web but ebay has a whole variety of them - brass ones available too. http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-MARINE-BOAT-BRASS-BALL-SCUPPER-1-INCH-NPT-1-VC-1AS-MARINE-BOAT-/320823584884 Have any of your other readers had similar experiences? This is far too shiny and nice for in the bilges. Does this object have a hole all the way through? That's not clear from the photo. Looks like some sort of decorative brass mount to me...maybe for a flagpole or light, something that needs to be able to be removed fairly easily? |
