What has EH ever done for us? - Wax - 21st August 2013
Personally I would notice if EH was not there and do worry about the changes coming. If the IFA wasn't there I doubt I would notice. I also think people really do not appreciated what EH does but I will be the first to admit they are not perfect.

Weegie Wrote:Ah, Whitby. Fond memories of inspecting a major cliff collapse with Buzz, only to realise that the ground was cracking behind us...as you say, spot-on health and safety!
You'll have missed the foot-wide crack across the lawn at the coastguard station the following year - oddly enough they seemed to have stopped using the place, although wierdly the lawn (and crack) had been immaculately mown, ninja lawnmowing anyone?
By coincidence am there tomorrow on hols - spying on the landslips too, since there's been a frightening lack of professional archaeological input on that front (they weren't consulted except rather retrospectively). The houses (really interesting row of jet-workers cottages) got demolished without any archaeological consultation or recording whatsoever, they trashed the field behind during the works (the one where the footpath runs down from the Abbey carpark - passed that one on to EH), and a chunk of the churchyard was destroyed without record during remedial cliff-top works for the small slip above the kipper house. The church tower's getting rather close to the edge, but in a show of bravado they've had it re-pointed anyway! The big slip near the NW corner of the churchyard (AS archaeology all over that area) never even got a mention in the press

I like EH.
Their guides are spot on (the ones I've read). More people should read them.
Also I love the listed building thing on their website.
They should get more money and have more power though..............:face-stir:
Oh and archaeologist should get into their properties for free.

Yes Dinosaur, I know. The excavations that we did at Whitby really demonstrated the quality of the A-S (and later) archaeology that is crumbling away. M'colleague Mr Wilmott is pulling together the assessments form all our work there, so it will be well published. And Dinosaur - I miss the old CEU days too. They couldn't last, but while they did it was the most fun I've ever had with my clothes (mostly) on.

Ooh, is there finally going to be some Whitby publication? Will take all the fun out of me getting photocopies of things from Buzz all the time...and I may have to publish some of my stuff too... :0

Why'd you think I've always liked the sign jobs, it's saved me a fortune in entrance charges :face-approve:

Ahh Whitby! wrecked my liver and the only place I have seen spoil buckets drifting on the breeze 20ft in the air. (was a force 12gale. I am with Jack more money and more power to the archaeolgy side of EH. And more joined up thinking and respect for archaeology from the buildings side.

depends what you mean by eh, does it not. They seem to be all things to all- make it up as they go along. EH a landlord of tourist sites can go shoot its self. Surely that should be left to who ever runs things like lego land. Using the same gun you can shoot all the people who make out that they do field work, and all of their laboratories. They were supposed to have been killed off years ago. They shouldn't have a penny to give out as so called grants, that's a top scam and ripoff of the people. Probably best that I go away and make up a list of all the bits that make no statutory sense to exist. I always have it in my mind that they should be solely advisors to who ever is the current government power. I don't think they should list anything. Not entirely sure what heritage advice should be to a government, reminding them what the law is?

Just like I use my NTS card to get into NT sites. } Yes, there will be a Whitby publication, including the cliff-top, HLF excavations and the enclosed cemetery. Should be a cracker.
