Has everyone got ideal terms and condition Pete?

The Bajr crusade must continue!!

"No conservation job will be that well paid"
Simply not true - please refer to ICON guidance on such matters. Entry level posts at the British Museum are attracting salaries of £19,999 - £23,431. Plus most conservation jobs have pension schemes and pay sick pay as a matter of course. Seems better than the average £16k for a site supervisor. P&C are still bad all things considered....

The sword of moral crusading shan't be sheathed then... espesh with people who have opinions commenting and guiding here

And we do have some other interesting debates to have... such as how to discipline those outside the IFa... how to disciple those in the IFa... how to make archaeology relevant.. how to bring in training... how to revamp the old guard.. how to work together... how.... ah... ya get the idea! Lets not forget that BAJR is on the frontline of detecting issues too...
Currently I am bloodied up to the hilt in a few secret battles.... oooooooh... I love a good fight!

I'd like to see much more of a debate over open access to archaeological data - that would be a worthwhile fight.

er..then start a thread (or do you mean in the real world and not the BAJR world?).

BAJR World... a host of Badgers under one roof... its a woodland creature extravaganza!

I agree... open a thread on that... though was also relevant on this thread... as is it worth BAJR kicking out about it... or is it already happening with OASIS and ADS grey literature coming out... and more and more SMRs appearing online - ps... have just been told that http://history.wiltshire.gov.uk/smr Wiltshire is online...

SO ... keep em coming

Possibly based in Lancashire County Archaeology Service - you posted the pictures from Pete a while back!

Interesting that an 'Entry level' post at (about) £20-24k is seen as well paid - its all relative, that salary presumably includes three and a half grand London weighting and the chances of the post holder being able to afford to live in anything like decent accomodation in the London area on that salary will be, I suspect, fairly low.

Compared to most 'trainee' digger jobs its OK, compared to my pay after nigh on 30 years its pretty good but ITS NOT GOOD! Only just around average national pay figure.

Is BAJR what it used to be - voice of reason - 23rd November 2007

you might find this more useful in looking at aspirations for Museum pay and comparanda.

http://www.museumsassociation.org/asset_arena/text/07/salaryguidelinesmay2007.pdf

note that these are aspirational and non-binding and indeed the reality of musuem pay results in lower salaries than these. Also, competition for entry level usually requires demonstrable previous commitment eg by volunteering for work placement, or by post-graduate studies as well as specific detailed subject knowledge.

so, not that different at all. At least the IFA minima are binding for RAOs.

Is BAJR what it used to be - BAJR Host - 23rd November 2007

I did indeed talk to the Museum Assoc. and sugested that if they come out with such a document they should at least hold to these pay scales when they accept adverts... there response was similar to the IFA ... its not up to them to tell people what to pay.. and so, we have the situation that in a JIS (not knocking it) sheet you can have jobs that are under the IFA minimum next to jobs that have to be over it... If the IFA stood with BAJR on this then it would remove the outlet... similar to the leciester Uni resource for museum jobs... who (like BAJR) won't advertise jobs that fall below the MA minimums .. while the MA will ..... doesh that make shensh?

surely shome mishtake.

however... as has been said... the P&C seems to be more and more coming under control, and although not great is improving year on year. [ thank you BAJR - IFA - PROSPECT = see what can be done when we work together ]

I am coming up with worrying 'little bird tells me' of RAOs only advertising with BAJR the ones they can get away with... and the ones they can't they try and fill elsewhere... and other stories (and they are just stories at the moment) of conditions being not quite what is expected.

HOWEVER..... time to get training, community, education up there now! make us relevant.

O.K just another quick one on pay and conditions and allied disciplines. This one was in the Irish Times job section last week. Roscommon County Council are looking for a Heritage Officer. Pay in the region of 47,000 - 67,000 euros. Thats nice.
