- still puzzling over the sword thing... it seems to be a common thread...

A story arc I believe they're called - although this one's nowhere near as gripping as missing planets and disappearing bees!!!

Just been sent this ... Mark must indeed have cahonies the size of footballs.. I take my hat off to him...

Quote:quote:a) Tacitus and Cassio Dio give completely different accounts of the death of Boudicca - so if one is wrong, why cant both be?

b) Everyone seems to have not noticed the extraordinary coincidence
of the Boudicca revolt, the start of the construction of the roman
baths and the great fire of rome all took place within 2 years.
surely they were connected in some way?

c) now the romans used Saltpeter to preserve meat - surely this
great civilisation would have been clever enough to realise that when
mixed with a little carbon it also exploded.... i know that Greek
fire is only attested in the 7th century - but classical sources are
so unreliable, and we are archaeologists after all...

d) and how to you explain the 'grenade' that is on display in the
Roman bath museum - and which we copied shamelessly in plastic, as
they would not let us blow up the original.

And so is it so implausible at all - shame on us as archaeologists,
we just dont use our archaeological imagination......

I would now like to suggest that although there is no evidence for spacemen building stonehenge, it is the only option... that it is no coincidence that most kings in England have names that begin with E or R or H.. which clearly points to a secret.. as when you put the letters together .. it is an anagram of HER (Historic Environment Record!) spooky!

I have to say that my trousers are based on an ancient design from the steppes - and here I am in Scotland, wearing a form of costume that comes from far away.. coincidence again? I think not..

Go figure... I am in Scotland, I wear trousers (when I am not in my kilt) and I was involved with an HER.. I also have a strange sword shaped vegtable in my garden.....

I wish that Mark would just admit that the archaeology is just a laugh... please please don't pretend that we are all too stoooopid
to use our imaginations... and again...

come on mark... give us a laugh.... admit its an april fools

Serious question (just for a minute)

Boudicca started in East Anglia and was eventually defeated somewhere in the Midlands. There are a variety of Boudiccan fire deposits (London , Colchester, Chelmsford, Verulamium etc) but is there any evidence or suggestion she ever went anywhere near Bath?

Not a criticism of the program (its a story), but I am curious.

BoneKickers Drinking Game (beta version) - BAJR Host - 24th July 2008

I have to confess that I am barely able to muster the will to watch any more... only the drinking game makes it fun... and even that seems a poor excuse..

At least by Shtkicker T shirt is on its way!

audience figures, from the Guardian:

"Bonekickers, about a group of feisty West Country archaeologists, pulled in 4.6 million and a 21% share in the 9pm hour for its third instalment, according to unofficial overnight figures.

Last week, it pulled in 5.2 million and a 24% share while it launched a fortnight ago with 6.8 million and a 31% share."

It would seem, like Spinal Tap, that 'their appeal is becoming more selective....'

Well, the drop may be of some note. Then again, 4.6 million is still quite healthy compared to other terrestial sites on a tuesday night(or most nights come to think). Now... if we could get 4.6 million people doing the bonekickers drinking game

Spare a thought or two (nay a tear) for poor old Channel 4 and the demise of Big Brother! Even the friday night evictions aren't bringing them in. Thinking I might knock on Channel 4's door and suggest a reality archaeology programme... Dig Brother<s>TM</s>
A live-feed, 24 hr day-long expose of a stay-away archaeological dig... oh the trowels and tribulations!

Ooo, ooo, ooo... I wanna be like you-ooo-ooo

oh the trowels and tribulations!

NOW STOP THAT! :face-confused: ..... funny though! Ah, a televised away job.... they would have to show the arrival into the economical B&B after the watershed though; I am not sure kiddywinks could stomach that first, brave look into the bathroom facilities.......

:face-topic:
So, Mr. H's point b), hey? A block of flats is built opposite my house, a block of flats is built opposite my parents' house and the credit crunch happens.... all in the space of two years! Everyone seems to have not noticed the extraordinary coincidence, surely they were connected in some way?

Why has this programme turned me into such a b*tch?! Big Grin

I think it is all a conspiracy to stop the in-fighting between the era-factions: Now we all have one common ground!

BoneKickers Drinking Game (beta version) - oldgirl - 24th July 2008

I am not quoting verbatim, as I didn't see it. But I gather Nancy Banks-Smith in the Guardian TV review said something along the lines of:

'The programme is only missing the presence of a large dog who is scared of ghosts'. Made me laugh!

BoneKickers Drinking Game (beta version) - Digitaldigging - 24th July 2008

Anyone have figures for how many major European settlement fires there were in total for that two year period?
And. . .I'll look up the reference, but I'm pretty sure Nero was suspected of starting fires himself - his agents would walk ahead of the flames making cash offers for the land the property was on. Very cheap way of aquiring valuable real estate on the cheap.
But as I say, I'll look that one up and get back to you.

BoneKickers Drinking Game (beta version) - Curator Kid - 24th July 2008

At least we'll be able to find the ACTUAL grave of Boudicca now. After Tuesdays episode and the suggestion that she was knocking off a Roman Officer, all we'll have to do is listen carefully in the right bit of countryside, and we'll be able to hear her spinning in it ferociously. [:p]
