World of Archaeology? - troll - 8th May 2005

Illuminated- Shangri-La is in me noggin. Whilst all is not well in the profession, contributions from as many people as possible are needed. We need not name and shame(God knows I want to) but we can discuss the concepts openly and OFTEN. I would encourage you to share your views and simply argue a point or two without pointing a finger. One thing that really puts veins in my forehead is being labelled an idealist when I suggest change-infers that either apathy or ignorance is endemic amongst such commentators. As a member of the profession and as a member of the public-you have the right (some would argue moral and ethical obligation) to shout. Welcome, unload here...Big Grin

World of Archaeology? - Digger - 9th May 2005

I have been rather lucky in that when I graduated in OZ I got work straight away(contract finds photographer, which was extremely well paid). This was followed by some large development excavations and evals. Also worked alongs side aboriginal representatives on some burials (so it's not all no you can't touch it). Pay has generally been very good but long days on some sites (10 hours) but Oz has compulsory pension paid by employer which is another bonus.

Left due to uncertaincy over long time work as a new grad so moved to Eire (less pay but more work)and UK (even less pay but long contract).

after a while the shine will soon wear off working in uk archaeology, the pay and conditions are awful mate, but i'm sure you've found this out by now.
