I think that the 48-hour limit does not apply to each individual week, but to an average over a period of time (17 weeks).

So, if someone was made to work 60 hours a week for 7 weeks but reverted to a standard 37.5-hour week for the following 10 weeks, their average would be 46.76 hours - perfectly legal.

Not sure how this affects people on contracts shorter than 17 weeks.

My apologies-nothing more sinister than being away from the delights of internet. As it stands today, I now work for a grown-up and very professional unit and do eight hours a day-5 days a week.Not only that, I get paid to drive too! In answer to your enquiry-yes, I did do 12 hour days and six days a week was the expected commitment.I did also sign the opt-out clause.I`m of the opinion that I will work as many hours as I choose until it breaks me! It is however, a sad thing when archies have to exhaust themselves to earn a decent living.I don`t mind doing it when I get the opportunity-just not for muppets.Big Grin
