That English Heritage survey is quite interesting. I think that if you specifically were to ask people 'How important is Heritage?' (v simplified I know) then you are likely to get the replies that English Heritage got, because the phrasing of the questions implies that it should be important (note - important and essential are not the same thing).However, if you were to ask the same people 'What is essential to modern life?' I think very few people would think about archaeology. Sarah, we will have to agree to disagree!

no I agree with you if they were asked what is essential to modern life that archaeology would not come into it BUT what would? I think alot of things would be left out that if you then asked them directly about they would say oh yes that is important too.
But I did think it was interesting that so many people did answer it was important and yes they may just be giving the answer that they think people want to hear even taking that into account the number was pretty high.

It could be said that 'history' puts the present situation in context, whilst archaeology often provides a bedrock for history. Simplistically, if we were to call this 'day one' and all start afresh on a deserted island then we wouldn't need archaeology. Not until we realised that it could tell us where people hadn't survived on that island, what crops had been grown there, how they had built shelter, what they had eaten... all specifically useful data to ensure our survival beyond day one. We would need it more than music and painting - but less than fresh water. History would be more useful in that context - but the island being deserted and bereft of records puts the mockers on that.
