when i was at oxford last year there was a bit of chat about the fact that they have done lots of framework projects with wessex, so maybe its just a firming up of that agreement rather than merger? I cant see oau merging with someone they might have to play second fiddle too??
on a slightly related note does anyone know if its true that headland have taken over pca ltd? or just the north office? or is it another random rumour lol!
Merger - Anthemis cotula - 28th July 2010
Is merger the right term? From my experience Wessex are a much bigger and more corporate minded unit than Cotswold it might end up as removal of a rival and asset stripping exercise.
Merger - BAJR - 29th July 2010
just a small note of caution to folk, in that rumours can be an issue. Only facts please.
Merger - Unitof1 - 29th July 2010
What about possible and probable facts?
Merger - RedEarth - 29th July 2010

Wessex for one has a full time member of staff whose almost exclusive job it is to provide accommodation for away jobs! Don't know about Cotswold but I'm told they also accommodate for jobs distant from their offices.
Did nobody notice the 'Accommodation needed in Salisbury area' thread? Which company was that contract with? I assume from that thread no accommodation was provided for that month of work. Is this the future? Sleeping on people's floors, moving from job to job, no sense of career progression for all but the lucky few - oh, hang on...
Anyway, I'm sodding off again now, but I will still be lurking, byeeee

You're thinking of the top hat, but that was Community Chest. Perhaps that's what they could rename the HLF!

Surely this add was for Salisbury based staff - what company pays for accommodation for staff applying for a job based in the same town as its office? I'm sure if the month's work in question is any distance away from Salisbury, then accommodation would be provided as normal.
Merger - Oxbeast - 29th July 2010
Perhaps this new conglomerate will want to relocate their offices away from such isolated, badly connected small towns with no affordable housing and tiny rental markets. I always though that Southampton and Bristol (or maybe Reading) would be far more sensible than Salisbury and Kemble. Its difficult to attract people to move on short contracts if there is very little prospect of employment in the area if the contract finishes.

Can't disagree with that...

Relocation is an expensive option though. Better to rely on employee mobility. Ok, not every employee can move around the country, but in my experience that is the least of the units's worries. There will always be someone who can move, and tough for the person who can't. I should add, that I am totally opposed to such an attitude. I know we all have businesses to run, but where did it get written that we have to start acting like unethical businesses - especially towards our employees and fellow archaeologists?
