I suspect that he also does not understand two of the basic concepts of archaeological stratigraphy - assessing the degree of intrusiveness or residuality in any given context....the paragraphs suggesting that the best archaeology is that where finds and texts coincide is a little like saying 'It's always easier to date the finds when they come with a label detailing the best-before date' !!

Don't knock it, I've had occasion to distinguish two intercutting previous trial trenches in Durham by checking the sell-by dates on Mars bar wrappers and coke cans (considered a healthy digger-diet in the early 80s) - considering they were dug in 1983 and 1984, and hence in some cases I was running from batch-numbers, I think that's about as precision-dating as it gets :face-approve:Cool
