Research Beyond Mitigation and Universities: Maximising the Impact of Community - Doug - 10th June 2014

'Were the other sessions much different?' -Yeah- depended on the session. There was an illustrators session, which as you might guess was full of illustrators. I was in another session on international collaborative projects which had universities, commercial units, individuals, etc. It really did depend on the topic. You can get an idea of the diversity from the programme- http://www.archaeologists.net/sites/default/files/node-files/2014-programme-WEB2.pdf

"It sounds like you did it on your own volition.' - yep I have been doing it for a few years now at some of the events I attend. Still learning the tricks of the trade but the videos are getting better.

'A little more professionalism and /feedback and the ifa could produce these videos (possibly in real time/daily) and get a feedback forum-questions and answers going with the presenters-video conference of the conference.' yes, experimented with this for the TACOS workshop in york about a month ago. (improved sound for most of it) you can see the edited video here- http://dougsarchaeology.wordpress.com/2014/05/14/tacos-a-great-archaeology-conference/ Pat was handling the online system/forum but we had about 15-30 people participating remotely/virtually. They could and did ask questions using the system and twitter. It was streamed live- though there was a problem with the sound for the first presentation (learning experience)- minus that the live streaming went pretty well. It did not have the red carpet or awards but along the lines of what you were talking about.

'You should be paid to get it going.'- that would be the dream. I am more than willing to teach anyone the required skills and share my experiences.

'Doug are have you got your video out for the next algao swanee?'- there was talk of me doing it a year ago but nothing happened. Reminds me I should follow up on that.

'Thanks for posting Doug, good to catch up on the ones I missed!'- glad you find them useful.

although I only managed to get half way with hosty before the onset of rabies there was a lot of one camera angle, could an improvement be had with editing two if not three camera angles even if some of those angles are phone cameras. It would also be nice if we could get some pictures of the audience so that we could work out how many algao members were present. This is not a word of a lie but this last month my local regional mounties have been more out at an very important site meeting than in waiting to talk to me....and eh need a three week window to reply to pre-application emails. I can see mid june is a no go

Big Grin just did that, multiple angles, with a conference a few weeks ago. Once the speakers give me the ok I will post those videos. It does make for a more interesting viewing, in my opinion, but is a ton more work. I would say each camera angle adds 30-60% more editing time. Given that I do it for free I am not sure I will doing it again or have the time to. But once I post them you can tell me if it makes a big difference in viewing. If it is a better experience I might consider doing it again.

Yes, thanks! And learnt a useful lesson (the hard way!) about keeping copies of my work. It is the sort of thing that would be useful - Hosty's skills passport should be brilliant for keeping tabs on CPD & training in the early career stages, and it strikes me that there might be a need for something similar (or at least a short guidance doc) for those progressing through supervisor/PO roles. The IfA New Generation SIG had a great-looking 'Speed Networking' career clinic at the conference, and I think they're pushing to do more of this sort of thing.

Indeed... you get what you get on the packet. and there ws a range of speakers, based on the range of speakers who offered. SOrry that my jovial ramblings made you froth.... but then I actually do what I talk about as well. ( as do those who appeared on the vids) Doug does this ( massive ammount of work) out of the goodness of his heart. And I for one would like to publicly thank him for these ... as I have found it helpful as well.

To be honest, I was more coherent than I thought I was. Simple question... can public archaeology and research agendas mesh... YES... when carried out in partnership with professionals ( of all hues) and with defined aims and outcomes. All knowledge is good, knowledge and engagement is better knowledge, engagement, and long term impacts in a range of subjects from art to edjamakashun is the best. It is a win win win scenario. but obviously does not suit all flavours of archaeology or archaeologists.

Sorry hosty to have come on a bit strong. One of the reason to encourage Doug is that I find it difficult to go to conventions although maybe speakers should produce their own video much in they same way as they might produce a poster.

In general i don't have the time or the money to go to conferences. I can say the same thing about volunteering, community work and teaching. And that's one of the issues that I have with conferences held by bodies that you would expect to be concerned with professional field archaeologists, I basically sit here thinking "tell us about the money". Without that aspect everything comes over to me as indulgence, algao justifications or academic residue.

Doug should you offer your service for a fee?

EH was kind enough to pay me for the TACOS workshop and CBA for another workshop. Though pay for time put in comes out to about 3 gbp per hour so not really worth it. Mainly, I have got conference fees covered and sometimes transport. The IfA conf I just did because I thought it was a topic more people would like to see so that was on my own time.

Right now I am trying to find software / hack something together so the editing would need to be done by hand. Ideally, then anyone can get a camera and mircrophone and do it on their own.

Do the Bbc do any courses in how to compile videos of confrances to broadcast?

You could use bbc 3 and bbc 4 which seem to just transmit a wait till the evening to watch a load of fiction when they could be transmiting all and sundries conferences from around the country.
