I'd like to rephrase my second comment "The RCHME should be reformed if EH is going to continue to be turned into a government body so that monument surveys etc can become more plentiful to assist in the monitoring of the survival of them." as it is based on personal ill-feelings.
It may read better as:
Reformation of the RCHME to provide the sector with a body that can dedicate itself to the monitoring and surveying of monuments. EH could then dedicate itself to the formation of policy and providing guidance.
If anyone feels that this could be improved then feel free to re-write (in your own post

Right..... thanks to everyone.... We now have the first BAJR (democratically written) submission to a national inquiry.
Jsut shows it can be done and it is not that hard to do. As we are professionals and amatuers in many different branches and disciplines it means we can look at a problem from dozens of angles.

The sad thing is that with Government white papers they come along each time there's a new Government. I'm not sure any Government could take a holistic view because the costs in there minds would always be too prohibitive. They really don't seem to like joined up writing to much. The problem being that they tend to be reactive rather than pro-active. Public opinion means all so funds for an Olympic games are readily available and indeed under written, but Heritage is not always a seen thing so its piecemeal.
I liken it to a jigsaw being made from small pieces over a long period of time. Trouble with this is that its never the same person making it so the picture and the priorities get easily distorted. You end up with the dogs dinner rather than a fantastic picture to be admired by all!
Sorry to seem so negative, but track records dictate! Still we can live in hope.

If all sectors of archaeology and heritage got together and whispered, the sound would be loud enough to hear.
If, however, all sectors of archaeology and heritage got together and shouted, there would be no doubt what public opinion was.
Just imagine that and a bit of education of the rest of the public and nobody could ignore us.
Then again we could just sit back and watch the mess happen and let them keep their track records. [:0]

archae_logical I agree with you 100% that we are the public and what we think and say should matter, but life's a bitch and the food chain is a long one!
I also agree that if all sectors got together and even so much as whispered we'd get some response, but what chance of that?
Priorities,priorities,priorities! The words spoken to me by my local Lib/Dem MP. And thats the problem. The pot is only so big and those who want their bit for education or health or a raft of other good causes seem to get the lions share first.
Look at the local/county councils, they too are cutting back at an alarming rate because the money in the pot doesn't seem to go so far these days. Do they shut an old peoples home or get rid of another archaeologist? Thats the stark facts that are being faced today as we know so well.
This leads us to the Heritage Lottery fund. I could go on all day about what is a greater priority for funding as we all could, but the fact is that unless those who hand it out can see the benefit to the community then they really don't care if it goes toward the intifada in Luton or the chaves weekend fund to Southend pier.
So shout, "Yes", but all the hard work in the world will fall on deaf ears unless they can see the benefit to all. The issue to me is simple, not enough people in the right places!
