Plastic Bags!!!!!!!!!!!!! - Soils - 4th March 2008 There is many alternatives to plastic bags. 'Eco' bags for your shopping (jute, hemp, calico, cotton etc) 'corn starch' bags for when you really do need a more water resistant bag, and corn starch tuber ware style boxes as well. If you start to think 'Local' not global when it comes to pollution, peak oil etc, your making the right steps to change within your community, this can spread! the excuse of 'china is building more power stations' or we can stop wars etc, doesn't stop you changing your own life and helping to change your community. Plastic Bags!!!!!!!!!!!!! - BAJR Host - 4th March 2008 Absolutely Soils ... absolutely! now agreed that ziplok bags may be a nessesary evil... at least they are used and stored.. can we get the ones that are thrown away (gawd forbid!) taken to a plastic bag recycle bin? little steps... next will be turning pavements into veg patches.. and eventually the M25 into a vast eco park "No job worth doing was ever done on time or under budget.." Khufu Plastic Bags!!!!!!!!!!!!! - drpeterwardle - 4th March 2008 Bajrhost said "little steps... next will be turning pavements into veg patches" in Kent its already happening with 90Ha of veg patch being constructed. See http://www.canterburytrust.co.uk/thanearth.html Nice project lots of community stuff etc. Dr Peter Wardle (Who already grows his own vegetables but should have the first onions, peas and broad beans planted by now) Plastic Bags!!!!!!!!!!!!! - BAJR Host - 4th March 2008 save me some onions! will be planting our veg patch soon... great link that as well! Nothing wishy washy... just real honest local change. "No job worth doing was ever done on time or under budget.." Khufu Plastic Bags!!!!!!!!!!!!! - Gog - 4th March 2008 Neeps and tatties is it? I am constantly amazed by how much veg you can actually grow in a tiny piece of ground - imagine using all those soil samples as grow-bags, you could start a side line by selling tomatoes from the office. Plastic Bags!!!!!!!!!!!!! - Sith - 5th March 2008 Quote:quote:Originally posted by Smaze Interestingly, it used to be the norm for archaeologists to store everything in paper bags. However, the biodegradability of same created storage and identification dramas later. Quote:quote:Originally posted by Jammy Johnny Whatever happened to re-using glass bottles rather than recycling them? It has always struck me that recycling glass bottles uses far more energy than simply sterilising and reusing the things (which we did for probably a century or more). Is it just modern squeamishness or is there more to it? D. Now everybody is going crazy about them. Careful, it might be hallucinogEeEe**33nnnn.. Plastic Bags!!!!!!!!!!!!! - historic building - 9th March 2008 Sith I think you are showing your age there... Plastic Bags!!!!!!!!!!!!! - Sparky - 9th March 2008 Great thread. Recycling bottles is great starting point. Lemonade bottles, milk bottles, beer bottles and a 10p (or two shillings, Dr. Wardle) bounty to boot. We could forfeit the bounty and use for greener measures such as paying to clean up broken glass. Here's a question, where do you recycle plastic shoes / boots? S |
