Festival of BRITISH archaeology ? - RedEarth - 31st July 2008

On the timing of the archaeology event: does it really make any sense to put it just before the school holidays in Englsnd and Wales (which BTW are aparrently different for different schools now)? Surely you'd get more participation if it were during the school holidays? and you'd want it when the most research digs are on...

From the few times I have been involved with NAW events having in the school holidays seems like a particularly bad time to do it - because everyone is on holiday, and hence abroad, or on a beach. Most commercial organisations are probably going to be unable to do much during the week as well, leaving weekends, which are difficult for the same reason. However, whenever you have it it is not going to suit everyone - so that was a fairly pointless response then... [:0]

Oxbeast is right

Quote:quote:The CBA are also publishing a series on Scottish historic burghs http://www.britarch.ac.uk/pubs/scotland.html
So the CBA still covers the whole of Britain in at least some respects.

and that's fine with me, and they do many things as Britain, and publish British Archaeology, which indeed covers Britain (next issue has an articel about Antonine Wall), they have britarch, which is a British mailing list... none of that is in question, and I am even a member of both CBA and AS. The only issue I have is that the specific event, the one in July... the one that is British and covers the UK, is in reality an English/Welsh event... though technically you could say it is UK wide becasue it has a single event in the very southwest of Scotland (about 20 miles from the border ) In scotland there is the equally sucessful Scottish Archaeology Month, both events are grreat at getting people involved in archaeology, both should be complementary and supportive. One is 99.999% in England and Wales the other is 100% in Scotland neither can claim the title of British Archaeology and UK wide status.

Long live support and equality.

Except that British Archaeology week is presumably open to people in Scotland, whereas Scottish Archaeology Month presumably doesn't return the favour?

I wonder what would happen if someone in England held an event as part of Scottish Archaeology Month? Probably, the world would implode with the shear ludicrousness (spelling!?) of it all!

Also, what would you do if you wanted to hold an event in an area that spanned the border? Oh why can't life be more simple?

My point still stands - why are there two organisations and two events when one apparently should be able to cover it all? Don't tell me it all revolves around the different dates of the school holidays! I can just imagine future archaeologists picking over the burnt remains of Carlisle, Berwick, and any other border(ish) towns saying, 'apparently it was the children's fault'.

No idea on the answer to that! But knowing my son, they'd probably be right....... Big Grin

Nice one Oldgirl... :face-stir:

It is indeed true that the Scotch are indeed invited to join in.. its just we are already doing SAM... so the options are to do two major events a year or one...

by that reckoning, if we (the deep fried mars bar swilling scotch) invited you (the soft southern mushy pea munching geezers) to get involved ... does that mean we could legitimacy change the name to British Archaeology month... or would people say...

" hang on... its all in Scotland, apart from a single town walk in Berwick upon Tweed ..." That's not British is it.? [hm]

both events can work fine together.. and given the Archaeology Scotland response on Britarch itself from Eila Macqueen ...

Quote:quote:The Council for Scottish Archaeology (now known as Archaeology Scotland) decided to move Scottish events away from National Archaeology Week several years ago, primarily due to the different timing of school holidays in Scotland & England, to tie in with Doors Open Days and European Heritage Days and to make links with other Scottish initiatives such as East Lothian Archaeology Week and Highland Archaeology Fortnight. Archaeology Scotland coordinates Scottish Archaeology Month, with funding from Historic Scotland as part of Scotland's contribution to European Heritage Days. SAM happens throughout September across the whole of Scotland. This year we will have over 150 events - all of which are free. We work closely with event organisers in Scotland to promote and coordinate SAM. With the increase in Scottish-based events throughout the year such as Perthshire Archaeology Month, SAM, Highland, East Lothian and so on, the Festival of British Archaeology needs to make sure it also promotes what is already an active and vibrant scene in Scotland rather than potentially confusing people and diluting effort.

Scuse me, some of us aren't from the soft southern mushy pea munching areas either, we're just not Scottish.

Maybe they're using British as an aspiration....... :face-stir:

I'm just trying to think of interesting acronyms using the initials of Wales, England, Scotland, Heritage, Archaeology etc......

but I've run out of inspiration..... Help!

edited due to spelling incompetence.......

Festival of BRITISH archaeology ? - Weegie - 31st July 2008

Hah! It was the school holidays after all! Tellt ye!

I think there are good and sound reasons for having both CBA and AS. CBA always had a regional framework, and the post-devolution reality is that there is a separate and increasingly-powerful political entity in Scotland. AS is there to lobby on Scottish archaeology's behalf to Holyrood, as CBA does to Westminster. An interesting question (to me, anyway) is whether CBA Wales is showing similar separatist tendencies in response to the Welsh devolution settlement?

I'm sure that it probably is all unnecessarily complicated, RedEarth, and would indeed look daft in a venn diagram, but that's life and semi-federal constitutional fudges for you. Thanks for the clip though!

And I've never seen let alone tasted a deep-fried Mars bar either, oldgirl, but then there's not much call for them in my current corner of Surrey...[:I]
