We don't have a regualatory system in the UK where archaeologists can be forced to account for personal and/or corporate backlogs. (Discuss!!)

Wasn't there proposed, a few years ago, an idea that developers pay into a central fund for their projects. This would then be administrated by a 'professional body' - the IFA. EH, and contractors paid upon completion of work.

That way, if an organisation goes bust! there is still money in the pot....

seems like a good idea to me :face-thinks:

I've just heard from a friend that his south east based commerical comp have just laid off 9 staff. They laid off about 8 just before xmas. Now they only have one site assistant per office and no work on the horizon. Is getting worse I think. If I can't get work soon I'm going to have to get an office job.

The redundancies continue and looking at the weekend Guar**an would imply 1 in 60 of the population is looking pretty harrowed on the prospects.

The idea of a central core fund being administered is not too far off the idea of rent deposits in monitored accounts.

The IFA and EH just aren't that kinda event co-ordinators.

That would be a whole other area, like revenue and customs.

As for the idea that commercially practicing businesses would even allow a method of sourcing competitor based funding for commercially data protected information and, or product.

I just don't see that kind of operation working in the real time economy.

It would take five minutes for developers to start using us as a financial black hole to weaken their competitors, by reducing their own liability within the central core funds.

Then the developers would just end up viewing us as complete liabilities.

What we need to do is muster some sort of % based overhead to be placed within a core fund, monitored and investigated as a grant giving trust body.

That body could then investigate principle and archaeological contractors whom routinly use this method of grant fund sourcing and then earmark advice within tendering groups information relating to purposeful under tendering by the principle, or then have a purse string tightening for access depending upon the amount invested.

the more you put in, as individual tenders, rather than % of finance.

That way smaller self-employed businesses could stilleffectively compete on a representative scale.

It would be like a archaeological business tax

Dependent on some sort of flexible moderator between amount of times money placed in and the amount of money placed in, which itself would compare to the costings based around a situational standard acceptable to the County Archaeologists and, or the IFA on a Barganing System.

The only think is to establish a system of liability, ensuring we ourselves don't use it as a black hole, to kill off competitors.

Your talking about some serious Accounting Knowledge and considerable Industry behavioural experience.

I work for said south eastern unit and can confidently say most staff don't really know where we stand. On the one hand redundancies are occuring, but although most site assisstants have gone that still leaves most of the field POs and supervisors as site staff (harsh truth but its easier just to recruit diggers when thay are needed). Projectwise things are tight, as they are in many places, but over all the picture is unclear as the management don't really tell you what the situation is (probably coz they don't know either which tenders might be taken up or not). Still its sad to see things happening like this.

thats alot of overheads and, or alot of peoples backs on the verge of going.

you get promoted if your forced to by your body in some cases and in others because you climb the slippery pole.

which archaeologists do you think will be able to keep up the work load?

experience of the work, or experience of the jocky for the work?
