The term in question is ubiquitous in the UK and I`m afraid that it does get used consistantly to describe Gypsies in general without distinction. Regardless of the points you raised, it is well known as a derisory term on an almost universal scale. Don`t get me wrong, nighthawks should be hunted. Say what you like...just choose less inflammatory terminology.Big Grin

Detectorists Guide - BAJR Host - 4th July 2005

perhaps you should go to teh PAS website... where you will see that everything you are talking about... is... has... or is about to happen....

kick the need for being in control... and start working with people..

Another day another WSI?

I`d like to see archaeologists and metal detectorists licensed. Those that are licensed can sit on regional registers. Tiz illegal to own a detector in Poland is it not? When are we going to shout about the publications that detectorists sell their stolen goods through? When does e-bay get the battering it deserves? There are of course detectorists out there who behave responsibly but, it`s still largely voluntary. Who`s doing what?Big Grin

Detectorists Guide - deepdigger - 5th July 2005

I can't see why anyone would want to own a metal detector, unless they want to locate stuff underground that they should'nt, I suppose that some people might like searching for lost items and I see nothing wrong with this but lets stop mincing words shall we, Honest MD's are the exception and not the rule!!

A statement that fairly, could be equally valid in respect of consultants and certain crowd pleasers based at Reading Uni.......

Detectorists Guide - sea-surgeon - 6th July 2005

Well said troll and deep-digger, now we are getting to the point. It's all very well to sit around going "give PAS a chance" and having a love-in with metal detectorists who play by the rules, but that is not going to get to the root of the problem.

The sooner archaeologists learn the difference between complaining and protesting the better. Look at the difference in actions between people trying to save the natural environment and people trying to save the historic environment. Who would you rather have on your side when the going gets rough, Greenpeace or the IFA?

Detectorists Guide - BAJR Host - 6th July 2005

This topic is locked.... and as Sea Surgeoun has not replied to my email requesting an apology the account is suspended for one month.

I have not spent the last year working on a policy that brings detectorists and archaeolgists together to see it ruined by ignorance and bigotry. think onSad

You would`nt recognise a protest if it bit you on the arse sunshine. Not only that, IFA and Greenpeace do the same job. They both take lots of subscriptions, have smart addresses and do f*ck all. Have just edited meself...had crap day...apologies.[:I] I feel now that I was a tad hard on sea surgeon. Whilst I feel that this contributor does need to be aware that he/she is not the only archaeologist on a mission!- I have to say that firstly, sea surgeon is passionate about his/her subject to the point of veins sticking out in neck and, more impressively, is in all probability, a bit of a wiley webble militant.Good. Been trying to get archaeologists off their arses for years. You know what? When the month in the wilderness is over (by the way, I believe Mr Hosty to be right on this occasion) I look forward to hearing from him/her again....simple terminology and respect guys.......Big Grin
