However, I don't think that the top two employers on the list don't employ archaeologists in the way that I interpret this topic to mean the word, namely as a 'digger' (I hate this term, but hey!). My memory of the environment agency and CGMS ads were that they were essentially junior to middle ranking consultant roles. My exp. of employers? I spent a lot of time creating BAJR, and via BAJR things have changed, wages are standardised, conditions are also checked if I am contacted off list. Nobody reacts well to public defamation especially if the claims arenot supported. If you have something to tell... do it privately first with me... in most of the cases, it is a misunderstanding. The thread is about employers and whether idividuals have had good or bad experiences working with them. I seriously doubt that many contributors have any documented incidents that are worth investigation by BAJR. That doesn't mean that all of the units listed are great employers though. With the exception of H&S issues units are able to treat staff pretty much how they see fit without much fear of censure. BAJR seems to be the ideal forum for excavators to recommend good employers, but with that must come negative accounts. I seem to recall that the Digger did a Fantasy Unit League a while back; was that stopped due to fears about defamatory comments? Is there not a way to lay down some ground rules about this kind of submission to the messageboard, that would allow the units to be named? Bit one sided to say that you can only make nice comments about units, but I have no more to add, and maybe we should stop now. Some of the jobs I have been offered recently were from some of the units mentioned as being well..you know. So if I hadn't read this, then I would probably have trotted off on a short term contract somewhere really stinky, and ended up with all sorts of problems. Its all very well knowing where is good to work for, but if you are a more mature lady like myself, the potential of being 'accomodated' in tents for example or worse generally treated like **** is very very valuable to know in advance. So if its too dangerous to put on here, can someone at least email me the units to avoid for future reference? I've always thought naming and shaming would quickly sort out the rogues, when no-one was willing to work for them. Those who've been around for a while know the units to avoid, but they seem to survive on a steady stream of new people like yourself who might not yet be in the know. If we cannot name and shame then a useful indicator of a unit that can't retain staff is the number of job ads they post on BAJR. Even big units with a lot of work don't advertise that often. Frequent ads indicate at best a company that has fluctuating workloads and cannot keep staff on, or at worst one where staff get out at the earliest opportunity. Either way, they're probably one to avoid if you've got the luxury of doing so.
