Knew a guy who accidently fell on his butt down some Cathedral vaulting. He also was a proponate of the Ole trowel in the back pocket. Then he stood up and cracked his head on a beam, tried to take his dust mask off, slipped again and twanged himself in the eye. He survived, was bloody funny to watch though.

Trowel Holsters - Real Job - 14th March 2006

I worked on a large road scheme in northern England where it was specifically written into the risk assessment that 'Trowels must not be carried in pockets under any circumstances'(The unit neglected to issue us all with holsters, so the rule got ignored)... I suppose it was just a case of them covering their arses in case we damaged ours.

What is wrong with the old (tried and tested) back pocket... A true trade mark of an archaeologist [8D]
There is nothing wrong with that at all, but I do hear alot of stories about injuries and it should not be seen as a negative or uncool thing to want to try and protect yourself, or be more comfortable on a dig. Protecting your knees (or your backside) is important when you are using them all day long Smile

Trowels at ten paces, at dawn... Are you gonna' pull that trowel or whistle dixie? Feelin' lucky punk? Are you lookin' at me? eh? eh? Truly this thread is beyond belief...[:I]

Peace man [8D] I'm from age when you had to feel the archaeology MAN.... Joking aside, but trowels are tools, to button them into 'holsters' seems somewhat a fashion statement (like personalised screen savers.. ) I've worked in field archaeology for 25 years and have NEVER had an injury from a trowel placed in my back pocket... As regards to kneeling? Try squatting, it is time efficient, saves your knees and get the job down quicker....

Trowel Holsters - mercenary - 19th March 2006

Ah but to squat you have to have a good back and be flexible. I have/am neither. So it's kneeling for me.

If trowels can be holstered, how about inventing a mattock sling. I have often bashed myself around the head whilst carrying a mattock/shovel combo over one shoulder. Could not some kind of strappage be designed to facilitate ease of transportation and keep both hands free? I am envisaging some kind of 'boy scout carrying flag on parade' type arrangement. Such an object would surely be a surefire winner and could be included in allocations of PPE to new staff members. It could even have reflective strips on it and be made of hard wearing gortex-esque fabric (hand crafted leather might not be durable enough).

Trowel Holsters - monitor lizard - 22nd March 2006

Never had an injury due to trowel in back pocket (which is where mine is holstered) but have had one fall out of said back pocket into portaloo. Have also lost a screwdriver in same fashion. You think I'd learn...

Trowel Holsters - BAJR Host - 22nd March 2006

If we are having mattock slings... can we have wheelbarrow holders!

Another day another WSI?
