It depends - about 50% of the retail price for a book goes to the bookshop or Amazon, so that leaves 50% to cover production (author/illustrator/editor, printing, distribution and profit). So of the ?1500 gross for 100 books, something like ?100 profit would be doing well. So seen as a money-making scheme it is a complete non-starter.

Personally I believe physical books are still a medium with special advantages especially for complex information. I have seen interesting videocasts on factual topics but they find referencing awkward, and of course if you're going to write a script out in advance you actually have to write the text anyway.

Just moved house and taken the chance to dump every book I have got. Paper books are finished but then I am also pretty certain that the written word is almost over as well.

I used to work in a place that has 2 million books, some 200 years old, and they'll see us out.
