RIP Time Team, you were a national treasure - pdurdin - 29th March 2013
Quote:the main characters of the series recounting their favourite episode over the years. What surprised me was that none suggested the TimeTeam in London (Gresham Street), or in Canterbury (Westgate) or at Ely as their fave. Which was quite surprising cos they were the only 3 episodes I recall that showed archaeology as it really is, warts and all...
To be fair, they'll probably be remember their favourite digs as they happened, not from watching the show on TV. You might see the warts in those episodes in particular, but not at all in the ones with more Exciting Things where the warts get edited out.

If you ever catch the old one they did on Lindisfarne years back, check out the trench that a certain female presenter keeps implying she dug - in every shot there's a guy behind in a yellow hazard vest with his back to the camera, although somehow his body language manages to shriek outrage throughout, probably because actually he'd dug the hole and the 'personality' only ever turned up and grabbed a shovel when a 'take' was required - he's still bitter about it now, a good decade on...shame I missed being on that one }

And of course, no-one in the world of 'real archaeology', like what you do, has ever claimed credit for anther's work

I don't like time team, I can't watch it without shouting at the screen.
But........
It has served and is still serving a purpose. It has made people talk about archaeology..........after all its got us all talking/ranting about it.

Fair enough, people will do almost anything when camera is pointed at them.

Somebody I know was being filmed for one of specials. During a break they took the opportunity to discuss with Tony Robinson and the director what they liked and disliked about the programme. They said one of the best things they had done was to show the diggers house in the Cantebury special (overcrowded & dirty) intercut with the unit director discussing getting a new roof on his home. When filming restarted, Tony Robinsons first question to the developer was "What do you think about the really poor pay & conditions in British archaeology?". Fair play.
I may not have agreed with everything they did but they certainly raised the profile of archaeology and have probably done more than any other programme to show what a dig looks like.

Farewell noble Time Team
-Though you sometimes slapped the lard on,
I will miss Tiny Tony
