Dinosaur Wrote:Read the ads? Could be why we seem to have lots of happy workforce, about 70 at last count so you are saying that all your employees get free accommodation or equivalent allowance and free travel to all your sites?

Always have done - actually plenty of other units I've worked for in the past have done same, pretty poor any that don't, I certainly wouldn't work for them

Watch him Dino he's going down the taxable perk route https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/tax/what-is-taxable-income/tax-on-benefits-in-kind/
Nothings free so don't use the term, use your edit tool and take it out of your posts replace it with words like "nice" or "safe" or "secure" or to get that bozz eyed taxman look "archaeological"
heres a self employed employed comparison http://www.watts-gregory.co.uk/uploads/literature/BusinessTravelandSubsistence/index.htm

Don't happen often but on this occasion Marc is right. No such thing as a 'free' lunch (or accommodation or travel perks). I can't see why archaeological employers (through one of their trade unions FAME or CIfA) could not agree a minimum level of accommodation/travel support and come to arrangement with the tax authorities.....there is a whole Diggers Forum survey upon which they could draw inspiration !!

I know where he's going. All the accountants, HMRC etc don't seem to have a problem and have never raised any queries. How do all the other units that advertise accommodation etc cover it? Most units seem to ship people about in minibuses and 4WDs for instance

Also I might point out that it's the client paying for all of it, costed into each job, some units are clearly not costing-in sufficient

i'm just picturing 70 odd employees put up in dorms or perhaps an abandoned hospital next door to whatever bit of road widening currently being dug. presumably your old lags have no fixed abode?

Tricky getting the supply for big schemes, smaller jobs usually get holiday cottages (sometimes very swish, we've had swimming pools and Jacuzzis before now - what's with all the white carpets though?), have had to rent a few houses/flats (+holiday cottages) during busy times, but some of them are quite nice actually, place I'm in at the moment is loads better than my flat

Easily show up spills and damage and therefore easier to overcharge for cleaning/repair/replacement.
