Anyway fellow detectorists, the weekend is coming up, if you are looking for a county which is wide open for detection I would suggest Lincolnshire. I even suggest it is your duty to see what you can find on the sites of the lost scheduled monuments. There is a good chance that 60 % of these Scheduled Ancient Monuments have totally gone and that was in less than ten years as the scheduled monuments that are referred to in the Cosmic report were only scheduled a decade age.
I don?t worry about being prosecuted. EH have ample evidence that landowners have destroyed these monuments and there has not been a single prosecution. In fact they are protecting the identities/locations of the sites. I presume that they will extend the same courtesy to you and besides there is not a single inspector in the whole of the county and the landowners do not even know that they have scheduled monuments on their land...

Would you go as far as to say it makes the basis of commercial archaeology economically redundant? The attrition on archaeology made by agricultural landownership is colossal compared to that by development. Why should anybody pay when others are being subsidised in the name of heritage and given maps showing them where to subsoil next. I think that in Lincolnshire the curators should pack up their bags (cash in their pensions) and every developer should laugh at their conditions as the pathetic little sop to nimbyism that they are.

What I was wondering was what was the procedure for gaining access to a Scheduled Ancient Monument to undertake an Archaeological Evaluation. Do you need a licence, what does it look like, who decides and what archaeologically is produced as a result of the evaluation/excavation? i.e. is there an archive and where will it be held.
You can also ask is it not beholden on an archaeologist working for an IFA RAO (and educational trust-charity) on any scheduled monument let alone 60 to produce an archive for the public-?Any answers
