Currently I would settle for anything that isn't bad lager or utterly deadly but incredibly tempting Indian whisky, which is all that is available in Ras al Khaimah. A good 4 or so pints of Hambleton's Nightmare would be tops though.:face-approve:

Has the beer in Durham got better then? Used to be all Sam Smiths, cheap but only really fit for soaking one's bunions....bottles of Brown with vodka chasers usually worked ok as an alternative though }

There is still alot of sam smith's. I did wonder what gave it that taste but ancient reptile foot growth is a fair bet. I would still accept a pint of their stout happily. And hand over a joyous ?1.75 for it.

Cheapest pint of Sam's in Durham always seemed to come with 'Poetry' (anyone who's ever drunk there knows which pub I mean, some of the grimmest evenings I've ever endured! - have they ever finished decorating?)
Slices of lime are merely a hypothetical concept in most of the Durham pubs the diggers used to frequent, or have people's tastes gone up-market these days? Also after a certain point doesn't the slice tend to block the handy drinking portal, preventing access to the important brown runny stuff? Shame they stopped making proper bottled Guinness, so treble Dublin Depthcharges are no longer possible, maybe a good thing }

They just finished decorating last summer, then the river flooded and the lower bar was ruined again... Good timing by mother nature once more. Luckily the poety has stopped however.
I had forgotten about the Brown n lime combo, a truely great drink.

Kel Wrote:Ah, yes, the glory days when I could afford holidays. I'll have a trip down memory lane with three bottles of retsina please. You need multiples. It takes one before you stop caring that it tastes like alcoholic toilet cleaner and two before you stop noticing. You'll need the third to use as a blunt instrument when fellower travellers try to stop you dancing on the table as the bouzouki strikes up.
(That last bit might be just me).
Holiday... hmm... hol... i... day... erm.. no, must be a quaint foreign habit. Are they something worth trying?
I can get along with retsina with no problem, but ouzo is another thing. My friend's grandmother's china service suffered badly one night after we tried to bind her broken heart with verbal abuse of her ex and mass consumption of ouzo.
