Viewpoint - Get Professional Help - Gilraen - 27th February 2010 I think the pair of you are missing the point. What you are arguing about is cameras, not the archaeology. I have been on site with people in dark churches who have said -'...have you got a flash on that?'..I reply to them, '...yes, I have a flash - I also have three settings on my camera that I take it w/o a flash and - by the way - can you bring in the generator and lights?'. The key 'primary record' is the photography. I do understand that it has to be done well, but Uo1 has cameras. It's his job. I have cameras. It's my job. No specialist photographers are needed. Viewpoint - Get Professional Help - BAJR - 28th February 2010 The arguement (or should I say discussion) is about the need to be able to use the camera in such a way that the photograph does come out correctly. Know what settings, now how to take an image...etc.. When I worked with Kirkdale Archaeology... our 'dream team' consisted of a person who could dig AND take good photos... a person who could dig AND draw anything really well... and a person who could dig (well sort of) but could record architecture really well. the specialist does not have to be just sitting waiting... but has to have the training to carry out the task. I can assure you that if I walked onto a site and asked the person holding the camera if they understood how to take photographs in any situation, there would (mainly) be blank looks... Not every team can have an Adam Stanford.. but it should have a person who understand the fundamentals.
